[RELz] Illy's Levelups

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:13 pm

I decided not to make a WIP for this and just go straight to a Release thread - however at the time of typing it is still pending - http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8213

I was interested in making a new class for my current epic and was having problems learning how to get a new image for the class into the game - I could see on the disc that their was a levelup folder containing 256 bmp but when I tried to replicate that in my datafiles I couldn't get it to work

After some PM's to Hrnchamd he reminded me that I would need to use dds format as the bsa had the same file and was in dds format

Yahoo I thought and promptly made a whole new set of class textures

In testing I learnt that the game will select a class texture at random and use it on the level up screen - after all these years I'd never noticed

Anyway I thought that made the mod even better as it gives some variety - I have tested these in game and had no trouble although I did increase the texture size to 512 X 256 for better images

I've used the Bethesda concept art for the classes - hope they do not mind - seeing as we use everything else of theirs for modding I'm sure it will be okay for non-comercial fan use and have noted that in the readme

Here's some screenies

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/2079/classsigns.png
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7200/levelup.png
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/367/levelup2.jpg

I did notice that i got the acrobat levelup texture for my first 2 in game levelups and then the warrior one - so not sure how the engine picks the texture

If you like this mod there are all sorts of variants you can do with it - like taking screenshots of your favourite characters dressed up in all the appropiate class gear and then using those as your class and level up pics.

Anyway - if someone likes the concept feel free to improve on it

Illy

will this follow you all the way even in higher levels ?

What does the original look like again? I've been using GCD so I haven't seen a level up screen in at least two years. :P

Either way it looks nice!

Sorry, I'm not sure as I only tested for the first few levels - I tested via paying for training and noticed that the first levelup image was the acrobat ditto the second and the thrird was the warrior - I believe the images are selected by random but it may be hardcoded into the engine - my character was a healer and I chose to upskill only one skill at a time the first two were intelligence based and the second personality so I know the image doesn't reflect the skills you've chosen to upgrade.

Hehe - I thought about GCD when I made this - however the images are still seen at character generation including custom classes which the game defaults to using the warrior image. The originals look like http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Classes - which are fine in their own way - I just got a little tired of seeing them as I spend more time at the Census Office than I do at Red Mountain.

Looks nice. Will you be doing one for the custom class, too? That's all I ever really play as. ;)

I began this mod because I wanted to add a custom class and couldn't see how to add a unique image via the CS - unlike the birthsigns where you can add a special image

I learnt that the game defaults to the warrior image in the levelup folder at class creation if you have a custom class - so I redid the warrior image only to discover that in the levelup screens you don't get your original class showing you get whatever the engine selects - so I went ahead and did all the classes to keep the style the same

So whether you add a new custom class via the CS or just make one at character creation ingame you will still see the different textures at levelup - which is why I called it Illy's levelups

@Mirelurk21 - sorry PES normally takes a day to accept uploads and I'm not sure if they check during the weekend however I'm sure it will be up soon - it didn't make sense to me to do a WIP thread when I'd already submitted it to PES however you could just roleplay this is a WIP thread and then you won't feel I'm being too slow in uploading it :)

I just leveled-up, and was pleased to see a new picture.
Then I went through CharGen just to see all the new ones for the Classes.
Great addition to the game.
I don't think anyone else has ever had this idea before. Fantastic!

Sorry about that - I dithered for ages about whether to use the art I used for the Agent for the thief but then couldn't pick something for the agent - in the end I decided to use the bosmer as - apart from the fact I really liked the art - it seemd the only appropiate image I had available though I was aware it did stand out as different (really wish Bethesda had released the animation pose she has though for the game - the ultimate sneak mode)

Thanks to everyone who has given such nice replies here and on PES - I really want to thank Hrnchamd for taking the time to discover why my levelup folder wasn't reading the images due to the format. It was kinda cool to do something original as I don't beleive anyone had released anything for the levelup pics before.

Hopefully others will create some cool levelup images in the future as they are like mini splash screens within the game. Am already thinking of adding new ones to my game :)

Small bump for a little mod that was first of a kind, is pluginless, has no FPS hits and is one of my favourites :)

I like how you chose MW concept art to the classes. I hope the image of crusader is Indoril ordinator, they're fanatic, religious holy warriors, fits great to the idea of crusaders.

Thanks the pic used is # 83 as seen http://www.imperial-library.info/content/page-27 - it was the closest I could pick from the concept art for a crusader - which is a more generic Dunmer - but he did have the look down your nose zealot look of a crusader

Dres noble for pilgrim? Can't say I find that all that fitting, but I still like the idea of this mod. I'll definitely have to test it out sometime.

Hmm... that was image http://www.imperial-library.info/content/page-25 - my thinking there was that it showed the a pilgrim's progress from being a penniless wanderer into a wandering warrior - which was pretty much how my characters progressed as that class.

For each of the images I did spend some time thinking them through as to what might be a story behind each one - in the end due to the way the game plays you get a random image at level-up time so you don't get to see your class pic except at the beginning.

I think the thing I was most proud about this mod was no one had done anything like it before :)

Agreed! :)
Adds a lot of depth to such a small part of the game. I will never play without it.
