Immersion and the Everlasting Candle

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:12 pm

How many dungeons have you been down in this game that have been sealed for centuries yet still have candles burning? My guess is ALL OF THEM.

Why couldn't they have had it that you had to use the candlelight spell for light and use flame spells to light the candes (for mages) or use torches and fire-starting flint (for non-mages). Lighting the dungeon as you go down it would have made the dungeons a lot more immersive... what are those glowing things in the dark... a monster or a couple of gemstones??

For example the Falmer are blind from spending so much time in the dark... SO WHY ARE THEIR DUNGEONS FILLED WITH LIT CANDLES?

Of course some dungeons would be lit... ie the ones with bandits in them. Other dungeons would be lit naturally with glowing fungus. But having lit candles in every dungeon kind of reduces the immersion factor.

Yeah I noticed this, for the pc version at least i'm hoping someone makes a mod that removes them so ancient dungeons and such are pitch black, like how they should be, so you need to bring a light source to get through them.

Yeah, that would make dungeons a lot more interesting.

It's simple. The ancients did indeed solve the energy crisis. But then, far off in another land, the American government found out. They then ordered SEAL team 6 and other Spec Ops groups to invade Tamriel and to wipe out the greatest minds throughout the land. If the energy solution ever made it over to the States, the oil companies would be screwed.

Many of the dead bodies we see in the dungeons are left as reminders, showing what will happen to those who dare to harness the power of ever-lasting fire.

Considering that every dungeon I have been in so far is populated, it makes sense there are torches and candles.

This seriously threw me for a loop when I first noticed it.

It must not've bothered me, as I never even really thought about it until just now. Then again, I don't much care about "immersion," as I am always fully aware that I'm playing a game. Just one of those incredibly trivial things that seem to bug some people I guess.

Those chaurus [censored]s are crafty ones

Also, for being blind, some Falmer are amazingly good archers.

I thought they might allow us to drop lit torches without a mod this time around. Can't even use lanterns, but damn if those candles don't burn for centuries!

Man, Draugr there were scary bastards. All you'd see in the blackness was two red eyes and a horrible dry cracky voice.

You know this reminds me...why aren't there any naked Nords in Skyrim?

They also solved the problem of preservatives. As shown on reddit, you can search a shipwreck that's been sunk for 100s of years, yet find a fresh and tasty cabbage in one of the barrels

It would be cool to have a few totally dark dungeons. Then torches and light spells would really mean something.

They would need to be kept to a minimum though, that would get old fast if there were too many.

I've yet to see a Falmer dungeon lit with anything except fungus/crystals/weird greenish ambient light.

Can anyone give me the name of a Falmer dungeon lit with candles?
