IMMERSION! Its Magic!

Post » Tue Nov 02, 2010 8:40 pm

OK Folks!

Well here is a forum experiment that hopefully can turn out to be a creative, fun addition to the forums. Here goes.

I am going to take ideas I have posted before, as well as a few new ones, and start a thread about.....Thats right. Immersion. Given the immense popularity of the word when referring to TES, there seem to be quite a few people that dont share the enthusiasm. I'll admit Im not

So that said, I am going to post my ideas for 'immersion' They are ideas to make the game more........ 'immerseable'(?). Feel free to post your ideas for 'immersion', serious or not. Or, simply post ideas for what you think could make the world more 'realistic'. Obviously my ideas are meant to be taken as a joke, however feel free to post serious ideas as well. But please keep an open mind. Hopefully, some of this will make people realize that immersion isnt always their best, life long chum. In fact, sometimes immersion feels like.....well. Real life. And sometimes real life aint so pretty. And all joking aside, its nice to see realistic, well thought ideas that add to the realism of our in game world.

  • You must sleep 8 hours per day, and work 8 hours per day, behind a desk in an office.
  • You have to eat three meals a day, or you die.
  • When you die, the Elder Scrolls game disc bursts into flames. Once you die the game is over, and you have to purhcase it again.
  • If you dont drink water, you die.
  • You cannot save the game.
  • There are no menus. You dont know what your health is, or magicka, or anything for that matter.
  • You can get cancer and other diseases. Again, if you die, the game explodes. Better hope you have good genetics.
  • All NPCs and Quest givers can also contract diseases or be otherwise killed. Dont feel like doing those un realistic main quest missions? Kill the main characters and destroy the quest before it begins.
  • You have to file/pay taxes every game year (every 5 minutes real life)
  • If you marry and get divorced, your wife takes half your money from any future quests completed. Add children? 75 percent of future quests earnings.
  • If you break the law, you go to jail and serve the literal sentence. A 20 year sentence takes 20 years in real life.
  • NPC criminals will break into your house and steal any belongings stored there. They will also mug, attack, and kill you.
  • You can only get hit with a sword/spell/arrow once, and then you die. Keep in mind the game will burst to flames.

What about...
Daedra can be easily taken down if one has a bottle of Holy water.
Argonians die if they leave a room. You get all the adventure you can have in a house!
If you just off a tall area, you break your leg. Please spend the next few months inside your house waiting for the bones to heal.
You must live with your consequences. No more killing everyone in a town and then reloading. Reloading is disabled.
You can't mod life. Please refrain from modding Skyrim
If your character goes into a vegative state, you can only watch your character lie in the bed until you heal, or die.
1:1 Time. 1 Game Hour = 1 Real Hour
Thinking of more

You do realize the Elder Scrolls built its entire reputation on immersion right?

Live another life in another world?

If that's not an oath to make the game as immersive as possible I don't know what is.

As for not sharing the enthusiasm... To each their own, obviously certain concessions will be made where gameplay and fun trump making it as realistic as humanly possible. That being said, people come to the ES and return to it expecting an immersive experience because that's what the games have always been about, if your expecting some kind of anti-immersion rally to take place, I have a feeling you'll be disappointed.

And thats the problem I have with all these 'requests' for 'realism'. This isn't Earth, its Nirn. We are not constrained by human, or Earthly limitations. Example: Just because real Humans eat around three meals a day, means Elves, beasts, or even Mundus Humans do the same? A Human in reality cant do X, so neither can anyone in a high fantasy game? Realism should come from logic, logic based in the world and lore, not our world.

IMMERSION =/= REALISM

If we wanted realism, why would we buy this game?
We want something fresh and new and don't want to get "svcked out" of it by things like looking down and not having legs, or walking funny when we decide to walk diagonally, or not reacting to hits at all until we die or get knocked down
Immersion means you feel like you are in the game, it doesn't mean watching yourself pretend to work at an office for 7 hours or having your game burst in flames.

If you're gonna bash realism, at least change the titile <_<

I think they just created this to make fun of all these threads to add "Immersion!", like one for going to the bathroom, or getting hypothermia, or having to sleep most of the day.

And I agree! Immersion is a selfish word people use to describe things THEY think would be good in the game. Then other people take turns explaining why its stupid, doesnt follow lore, or they overall dont like it.

Im personally sick of hearing how things ruin immersion. Its a video game. You were never truly immersed in the first place, and to complain that certain aspects are not realistic is ridiculous. Of course we all want a realistic, believable world, yet we all dont over use the word immersion to the point where no one here even knows what it means anymore.

Like I said, its not a joke thread. You can either post a joke about immersion, whether you agree with it or not, or you can post real ideas. Your call.

Finally! another soul who understands how the word "realism" is used when referring to games. realism in games means logical or consistent with the GAME world, not REAL world. so that also throws out the "hey its a FANTASY game" argument, because even that fantasy world has its own rules and version of "reality" that should be followed. that said, eating (whether 3x in a day or otherwise) and other "survival" features isnt against TES lore or the gameworld so im all for it. just another thing to manage/take care of, like health, mana and stamina.

Real Life would be the most linear RPG ever. Think about it. Why would to dike around with sidequests. There's not such thing as "exp", so you'd probably just train, plan, and save whoever you had to. Lord knows I wouldn't ignore my workday because some foppish city elf drug dealer wants my to collect 4 "crab claws".

Really, I had a feeling avoiding that thread altogether was a good idea...

I suppose everyone has a point where they decide okay THIS is the ideal level of immersion I want... It's all part of the customizable gaming experience and it lets everyone enjoy the game THEY want to enjoy. No one has the right to tell anyone else that their ideas make the game "un-fun" because I don't like that idea and it sounds inconvenient. Likewise no one has the right to say hey your not allowed to not eat... That's IT you DIE!!

However, saying that Immersion in general is bad and blanketing it in such a way is just ignorant... Especially when the Elder Scrolls, a series we all love or we wouldn't be here has from the very beginning been about Immersion.

What is 'Magic'?

I dont like how the nords wear horn helmets. That is not what vikings wore. Its ruining the immersion of the game. I think that the weather should be dynamic, because if not it ruins immersion for me. If there arent more random NPC's, it means the game isnt immersive. Because in real life, there would be lots of random people.

On a lighter note, the dragons looked great. I found them to be remarkably similar to real life dragons.

I'm sure thats what the OP is doing... and he has a point. However, he (like most people) is confusing the difference between immersion and realism.

Immersion is when a game brings you in, and you feel like your part of the game world. Having to take a dump every 15 minutes is not immersive....

Realism on the other hand, is when the game strictly conforms to the rules of reality. Things like eating, sleeping, defecating, and other mundane real world tasks would fall into this category. However, I really don't fine most of them "immersive"... they are just added gameplay mechanics.

Thats not to say realism can't help make a game immersive, but the two are often very different things that are often confused.

What makes you think the Nords were conceptualized only after Vikings? Vikings were not the only people of the Nordic countries.

"You must eat 3 meals a day, or you die"
I lol'd at that one. Last time I checked, your body doesn't need near 3 entire meals a day to survive. Quite the contrary, actually. You can go a very long time without food and not die.
