immersion killers

death cutscense:
fallout 3 was fun in 1st person so everytime there was a slo-mo perforation of the enemy it took me out of the scene and became boring. if i want to watch somebody else land a epic smackdown death scene i'd watch an action movie.

daggerfall had no such death cutscene. neither did diablo 2. of course these are the 2 best games in history.

the skyrim demo video had a wolf killing cutscene and the audience cheered, the audience also cheered a duke nukem scene when duke kicked the enemys eye into the foatball goal posts.... should have made this optional.

loadtimes:
skyrim should let you paint or craft during loadtimes, otherwise i am pulled out of the immersion ...again.

a good game, just like a good movie(like the matrix), will make you forget about time and forget about your unemployment pay running out soon. TES has figured that out better then other studios, gears123 is fun but watching the main char do forward rolls turns it into a comedy with no real fear that he is in danger.

remember in obliv when you fought rats in the opening sewer dungeon, those things were huge and very believable..that my friends is immersion.

loadtimes are essential to consoles. only if beth were like genuises who could eliminate loadtimes, wow has no loadtimes, then the game would be perfect

Is your attention span so short that you really need to do arts and crafts between going in and out of houses?

So your idea of immersion and a realistic experience is unrealistic deaths and randomly doing arts and crafts when walking into a castle/scary dungeon?

Actually you can...It does involve going to a store, purchasing a canvas, brushes...having some talent may be useful...

The only way I could find painting immersive would be by dunking my head in the paint bucket!

Blame lawyers and poor patent officers for that one. Load-time minigames are patented and would require royalties to the current patent holder (Namco: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5718632.html)

I agree with almost every thing he said but to me the biggest immersion killers are the Steam or Xbox live notification that pop up when some one is logging on playing a game ect.

Immersion folks act like this game IS THEIRS and no one elses. They argue, if you want all this fancy stuff, go play another game!

But why again can't the immersion people go find their own game to play? Let ES advance and progress. Drawing in a new audience and pleasing most of their current audience.

With that being said, there are very minor, "immersion breakers," but so what? Load screens? Get over it. Finishing moves? Sure it would have been good if their was an option, but get over it. Stop whinning. If you want 100% immersion, go live your own life outside of your house.

Don't know about Steam, but Xbox Live notifications can be turned off.

I agree the finishing moves should be optional but the loading screens are fine,
I hear that you will be looking at your character or something like that. Oh and by
the way, Bethesda are literally the kings of immersion in the gaming world,

Hummm, perhaps because immersion is the original intent of the TES series?, go back over the series, very often you will find that Bethesda states they want to immerse the player in their worlds.

Info you should know: I have played a total of 30 minutes at PAX.

Death cutscenes:
Having played them and experiencing a few in my 30 minutes, I can tell you they're not intrusive and quite fun to watch. They take a few seconds (if that) to complete and they're typically hero shots of your character performing awesome tasks. You say you're watching someone else lay the smack-down, but if you were truly immersed (as I was in a mere 30 minutes) then you'll see your character as an extention of yourself. In essence, you are performing the kill shot. I can tell you that these death scenes didn't take me out of the game as much as you'd like people to believe. They're brief moments of extreme combat that cap off a well rounded hit from your character.

Load Times:
Not sure if this has been touched on, but the cut scenes I experience during the demo was an object or character in full 3d that you can rotate and view as it loads. This was everything from a venison steak to an amazing hero-shot of a random character from the world. These are much in the vein of statues that you can view as it loads. The amount of detail on the models alone is astounding and really makes viewing these objects worthwhile.

Immersion folksPRACTICALLY EVERYONE act like this game IS THEIRS and no one elses. They argue, if you want all this fancy stuff, go play another game!

Fixed that for you.

Immersion is one of those words who's meaning is almost totally subjective. One person's immersion enhancer is another's immersion killer. However, if we took a look at all of gaming history, I believe we'd find the most common element that "svcks people in" is setting, story, and mechanics. If those three are just right, it doesn't matter if the game is 1st, 3rd, or isometric perspective. It doesn't matter where the animations are. It doesn't matter if you're allowed to repair your armor or if you're forced to eat a PB&J sammich every hour. Its the balance between the setting and the game mechanics combined with a story that will make you feel "drawn in".

Doesn't loading screens have interactive 3D models to play with during loading anyway? So why would we need to 'paint'?

The crafting during loading is impractical. You'd have to load assets just to get to load assets. That makes 0 sense.

I may be wrong but i like a good cut scene here and there from time to time and if they are good and varied i wont be desapointed if the apear frecuently. i dont like loading times but if the game is good enough i' ll wait . It is because Oblivion that i will buy this one. this will be my next Obivion or Morrowind i know is TES, but it was Morrowind and Oblivion and maybe more Oblivion that traqed my soul. No other game have trap me like this, so i say; its my next Oblivion.
would you say im allready immersed enough?

How did you even locate that? The language used in patents is so obtuse, I wouldn't even know where to look.

Also, that kind of patent REALLY makes me mad. It's pointless and stifles creation, it doesn't protect any real intellectual property. It's actually referred to as "patent trolling" and in many cases it's seen for what it is, and hard to enforce. Apple does this kind of thing a lot when they come up with the simplest function for using an ipod or ipod "A means of opening a program from within another program" or some such obvious action that is frankly necessary for operating most software.

I recall one person trying to patent "a virtual world, and the means to move and control characters in said world," only a few years ago. Either they now make billions of dollars collecting royalties from Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, and every game developer everywhere, or some judge called BS.

If your immersion is broken that easily TC then I don't know what to tell you, there is not a game that exists today you will be able to immerse yourself in. It will not however break my immersion at all, in fact, the finishing moves add to mine.

What you say make no sense. Giant rats is believeable and adds to the immersion? Loadtimes like it was in oblivion must really have taken you out of the immersion, as in every single other game you've played.
