Immersive Reading

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:34 pm

I believe that reading in Skyrim should be updated to make it fun and immersive, I have a few ideas.

1. Time still flows while reading

2. Special animations for reading that show your character flipping the pages

3. You can still hear ambient sounds, instead of just music.

Thoughts?

Very nice ideas. I'd love to see them implemented.

An animation of a hairy arm coming across my screen would piss me off, I saw on TV a demonstration of the IPhone where you touch the page and drag it across, something like that would be good

I think it has been said that books are 3D objects that you can fully interact (flip pages, examine covers etc) with instead of 2D walls of text in previous games. The interaction probably takes place in the inventory though so it isn't real-time.

It would be coolest as an equipable two-haned item, which you can watch your char read in third-person, but in first-person it would zoom in on the book...

I read that as well. Though I do like your ideas.

It'd be cool if it could be read to us as we flip through them by Patrick Stewart or Max Von Sydow though.

With your special animation ideas, wouldn't we only see them in 3rd person? If so, how do we read the book?

There are such things as first person animations, we just don't see them in the Elder Scrolls because there hasn't been full body awareness.

Ok that cleared that up. :)
I want all books to looks different. In Morrowind and Oblivion there was only one book texture (when the book is open) but I want some pages with tears or stains or smudges. Maybe journals with notes scrawled on the sides of pages.
That would be amazing!

I'd like it if reading was in real time - first time I played Oblivion I had to wait for a shop to open, so I whipped out a book to pass the time. Finished and realised no time at all had passed :P
