Looks like Blades armour to me.

Slightly different from Oblivion, but still pretty recognisable.

I took a closer look at http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim/ss-015.jpg screenshot. and I noticed something. The guard next to the dog seems to be wearing armour resembling that of a Roman legionary. Or at least, it looks like that to me.
Could this mean Imperials will be Romans once more?

I for one would love this. It sets them apart from the normal "Knight races" you see everywhere and what they pretty much were in Oblivion.
Discuss! :)

No they weren't. They were as "Imperial" in Oblivion as they always were. And they've had a distinct Roman look since Morrowind, which they had in Oblivion.

The topic, poll, and OP all seem to be about different things.

Imperials never changed. I like Imperials the way they are and have always been.

Oblivion guard's armors were much better than morrowind ones, it was more realistic

Do you mean Indoril armor? I don't think they are made to be realistic, just pure awesome

By returning to their roots, what do you mean? They weren't the Romans until Morrowind.

Actually the race was invented for Morrowind as it didn't exist in previous games. So they were practically Romans from the start.

No, they were in the other games, just not playable.

Love the legions of men who have brought civilization and law and order to a savage elf crowded existence. FOR THE EMPIRE!!

(so long as it doesn't turn into a palpatine empire.)

I liked both styles of armor so it doesn't matter to me either way.

That's how it was retconned I believe, but it might not be the actual idea.

I wish to see different guards with different armor types in all towns and cities. To give each city a distinct look (in terms of their guards).

No, Orcs and Imperials were in the older games. You just couldn't play as one.

I must say, whenever I have a run-in with a guard in Oblivion I can't help but wonder how Bethesda could have possibly strayed so far from http://images.uesp.net/c/cd/MW-Concept15.jpg which pretty much embodied the Imperials and the empire perfectly in Morrowind. I'm sure there's going to be a few complaints about this, but frankly nothing about the Imperials in Oblivion appealed to me - with the rare exception of some of the more eccentric NPCs, like Alessia Ottus. To this day though, they mostly remain in my memory as the "stiff memetic CRIMINAL SCUM" guard race. But in Morrowind, they were nailed perfectly - very disciplined and reserved, but also very smarmy and manipulative. Then we had Crassius Curio. :ahhh:

It'd be great to see how the Imperials' sense of identity has changed (if at all) now that their ties with the Aedra have been shaken and there's a new dynasty running things.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Caesar's Legion from FO:NV prompted someone at Bethesda to bring back the older design. Those guys love to live in the moment.

Actually the race was invented for Morrowind as it didn't exist in previous games. So they were practically Romans from the start.

Actually-actually, the first "real" Imperials were in TES: Redguard. This is the game the first PGE was written for, and the first references to the individual Colovian/Nibenese people as well.

Yes, I like the roman look.

No, that armor on the guy next to the dog does NOT looks like Roman legionary armor. It looks just as fugly as the armor the legion guards wore in TESIV: huge masses of unarticulated rusty metal. :yuck:

Great opportunity for Bethesda to sell some Caesar's Legion DLC armor for Skyrim

Looks more like the Blades Armor to me., though I actually liked the Imperial Legion armor in Oblivion more than the Armor in Morrowind, minus the stupid helmet.

Imperial guards had more than one type of armor in Morrowind though, The Gold armor (Templar?) The Chainmail and the Steel. Not sure if the Studded Cuirass or the Dragonscale armor was considered "Imperial Legion", but either way, it's always been kind of a Signature of the Imperials to look Roman-esque.

the blades armor looks extraordinarily roman, so I think the guard armor should be a different style

Yeah, I don't mind Roman influence on their designs, but to look overtly Roman is just lazy/boring. The Armor in the screenshot looks good from that angle, though I don't particularly care for it, but they can't all be winners.

It's been 200 years since Oblivion. I don't think all the races should be never changing caricatures. I have a mixed opinion on this.

How do you know that's an Imperial?...could be a Nord considering Skyrim is the land of the Nords and all gurads could be nords as every guard in Cyrodiil was an Imperial.

That's true, but in any case, even if it's not worn by an Imperial, that doesn't mean it can't be Imperial armor, it's not like Imperial armor magically falls off of anyone who is not an Imperial who tries to equip it.

Looks more like the Blades Armor to me., though I actually liked the Imperial Legion armor in Oblivion more than the Armor in Morrowind, minus the stupid helmet.

The Imperial Legion helmet in Oblivion was actually one of the few helmets I liked in the game. Though I liked the rest of the armor too, regardless, it WAS kind of your stereotypical knightly armor sort of deal, and I wouldn't complain about Skyrim doing something different for that reason, anything to move away from the cliche psuedo-Medieval generic fantasy thing is fine by me (Okay, almost anything, adding guns into the Elder Scrolls, for example, is an exception.)

It's been 200 years since Oblivion. I don't think ll the races should be never changing caricatures. I have a mixed opinion on this.

I have to agree, even so, I'm sure that if Bethesda changes too much, someone will complain, even if the change makes perfect sense, some people just don't want to accept that things don't always remain the same in every way.

I'm guessing that the Imperials are still trying to maintain a grip on some parts of Skyrim

I like the armor in the screenshot. It does seem to have a somewhat "Roman" look to it. I kind of hope there are fewer "knightly" types of armor. With the barbaric tone the game is trying to go for I would expect the legion, plain steel, and plain iron armors to look like something that might have been worn in real world antiquity or dark age Europe.
