Improved PC features/interface blah blah blah

Post » Sat Feb 20, 2010 10:05 pm

Eidos Montreal doesn't really love the PC that much. They develop the game for the 360/PS3 and then let http://www.nixxes.com/nixxes/ to do the PC port (which Nixxes seem to do rather well if the first impressions are anything to go by). So the PC version isn't something Eidos Montreal bother themselves with :P

Eidos Montreal is having someone else do the pc version? I didn't know that.

At least they care enough to hand it to someone else to do it. Beth isn't even doing that.

Is this a common thing, or is it rare that a developer outsources the pc version?

Um, as far as I know, I think it's a pretty unusual thing. At least, I'd be hard pressed to think of another incident of that happening. I'm hardly an expert on it, though.

Same here. I can't think of it happening with any other games off the top of my head. Though it probably has.

But when it's a title as big as Deus Ex (or TES for that matter), and the main company is too busy with the console version, I think it's possibly a good thing that they outsource the PC version and let a company just work on the PC specific things.

It could be a company with a lot more experience on the PC side of things, for all we know. Beth has spent so much time on the console side of things, they'd probably be hard pressed to do the PC stuff if they wanted to.

Rare. But in a perfect world this would be a rising trend - the Elder Scrolls series is simply the iconic Western RPG, in the hearts of both console and PC gamers alike. I'm hoping Bethesda has set aside at least 5 people or so dedicated explicitly to fixing up and maintaining the PC version throughout the game's development.

If only (and hopefully) they make the PC UI like http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11280 and will make the PC version like it should be.

Deus ex is a good example indeed. Besides, the community managed to convince the developers to make the yellow highlight on interactable objects optional! They saw the demo, they made a huge complaint thread in the official forums about that useless yellow babysitting crap and SURPRISE! they were listened to, which is really impressive.

Wow really? I noticed that too just today when I saw the video, that IS impressive.

I really wish that Bethesda takes note and gives as much attention to the PC crowd as some of these other devs. Time will tell when we see this menu and UI system in SR and how its different from consoles.

To me most if not all of what Todd says is simply marketing talk.

You will be able to play the game on higher resolutions? So they're not releasing a game for the PC that you can only play on 1280x720?

Textures have higher resolutions? They have the same resolution (at least the base texture), but use all mipmap levels instead of all but one. I think many people think that we'll get something like Qarls for Skyrim when he talks about higher texture resolutions, like 1024x1024 textures instead of 512x512 textures. Which will almost certainly be not the case.

Finally the UI. I haves hopes for that, mainly because I think the UI as I imagine it (after reading the preview and looking at the skill stats screenshot) svcks (made a thread about it http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1166239-anyone-else-worried-about-the-ui/page__p__17158245#entry17158245). It might work for consoles which use controllers, but for the PC it will be a horrible mess if it is even remotely similar to what I think it will be. Unfortunately they've shown that they don't care at all about the PC interface when they released Oblivion with its horrible primary school UI that you could only appreciate if you play on low resolution with a 15" monitor or below. So I'm unsure whether I can trust their words, even more so since they don't explicitly say that there will be an UI especially for the PC.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. There will be the usual mipmap level added on textures (which is ok, but not fantastic or any better than in previous games), higher resolutions (which every PC game has so it's not even worth mentioning) and the UI - we'll see.

Good to hear, but like Myouga and Phitt, I'm pretty sceptic. I really, REALLY hope the Skyrim team proves all us three wrong.

Yeah, with what's been said by Todd and company so far, my expectations for the PC version of Skyrim are actually pretty low.

I came. That is the kind of icon oriented menu PC needs. :liplick:
These stupid ipod-like lists make me want to puke.

IMO the game with the best vanilla menus is still Morrowind.

I'd much rather have a properly implemented list than that icon based inventory. By "properly implemented" I mean a list that shows all of an item's important characteristics and can be reorganized in ascending or descending order according to any of those characteristics.

You mean like the "detailed" file viewing mode in windows? Yeah that would be good as well, since it would be easy to sort and organize. However I would personally prefer the ability to quickly identify things through icons. Either way, both of those would be much much better than the gimmicky sounding UI they have now.

I think we definitely have reason for concern. Any mentioning of a PC UI has been vague with nothing concrete, and people often forget that developers sometimes obfuscate or embellish the facts in interviews. And I don't think the "shut up, wait and see" method will accomplish anything either. Best to act now, erring on the side of caution.

Or the ability to switch between them like in Windows.

Anyways, as has been stated, that pretty much sums up the PC as a whole, not just the UI. The only thing concrete about the PC UI is that it'll have hotkeys, as opposed to (or in addition to) the favorites menu. I do agree, too, that it's better to be vocal than just "wait and see." By then, it's often too late.

I find it sad that developers feel the need to advertise the fact they are making a pc port with such elementary features as drag-and-drop inventory and binding hotkeys. This stuff should be par for the course in any PC game. But that's the state of gaming nowadays. So yes, I give the Deus Ex team credit for implementing basic PC features.

Bethesda still needs to prove they will do the same for Skyrim. Even CD red succumbed by consolizing their interface via list inventories. Golly gee, now I can play it with a gamepad! :banghead:

I don't understand why we PC users are becoming so neglected when we make up the core of the Elder Scrolls community, and for the longest time too. All we want are a few higher res textures and a UI we can look at without retching. That's not asking too much... right ?

DarkUId DarN-like would be the ideal solution, I think. An aproximation of what Mitheledh said (a list with names but much smaller than Vanilla), and when you push a button...voila! icons only a-la wz_inventory (I just love that UI mod).

Well...there's always more to ask when we speak about PC's and their technology. But with that I'd be already pretty happy. It'd be more than I already expect, in any case...

Thanks man. I don't know what to do. I feel helpless, my voiced concerns going unheard. I think i might write a physical letter to Todd Howard.
