Improved mesh pack

Post » Tue Dec 08, 2009 6:19 am

Hey all, I was wondering if there was any mesh improvement packs around like the Visual pack which combines loads of textures from various authors.
And if there isn't, would anyone be interested in compiling one?

I've had a look around and there are quite a few mesh re-placers out there but as far as i can tell there are no really big packs.

It would be great to see loads of the objects in Morrowind replaced with better quality ones all in one pack, stuff like plates and candles and stuff are great. But when there in a house that is still quite low poly it kinda ruins the effect. All new improved interior and exterior tile-sets would be great.

Basically. There are so many mesh improvements out there such as new trees, new misc items that i think would be excellent if they were all included in one big mod. Any stuff that replaces the same thing could be added in a separate folder so that the user can choose which improved mesh he or she wanted to use.

Anyone think it's a good idea?

Yes.
That seems like a rather good idea to me.
Being able to get a full set of meshes in one package would be worthwhile for the convenience alone.
(I only use full texture packs myself... I perfer the ease of use, and the overall sense of consistency.)

Well i myself install the visual pack. Then i drag over specific texture packs that i prefer, like the imperial buildings, vivec, hlaalu building and telvanni buildings :)

I use all of AOF's texture packs i think :P

So, would anyone be interested in compiling loads of meshes? With original readme's and a new readme stating all the original authors names

hm. there are several mesh improvements and some for the same thing and it may be tex-replacer-unfriendly. an example:
there is mesh improvements, it also improves the apparati. then there is better item. it changes the apparati so that the old texes don't fit - but the meshes are even better then those of mesh improvement. - so what to do? give new texes? it's quite a compromise - but it may be an idea for people who don't know how custumize their meshes and textures...

Well i think, any that are texture replacer unfriendly could be added in an optional folder, including the textures :)

It would probably be a good idea if we started getting a list together of all the mesh replacers that are texture replacer friendly. And all those that arent, and then try and get permission from each author to use them in a giant mesh pack.

Good idea?

I've actually been combining MW2009 and Better Items II into one mostly vanilla textured pack for my own use.

Just want to chime in and say that the tilesets are high enough in polycount.
After working with both Morrowind and Oblivion tilesets lately it seems that a lot of Morrowind tilesets are higher or around the same polycount as Oblivion tilesets (haven't checked out all of them though).
The main difference between the models is that the Oblivion models have better UV maps and textures which work better with the meshes.

Imo what is needed is a UV map fix and not a mesh 'improvement'.
The only tilesets which might benefit enough to justify the amount of work involved, would be redoran and telvanni tilesets, and any others I can't think of right now made up of mainly curved structures.
Low poly meshes look better in Oblivion because of normal maps, and better lighting (Morrowind uses per-vertex and Oblivion per-pixel). These are what we need to add really (other than better UVs), not more polys (which I have a wierd feeling will come back to haunt us later :/).

You are probably right dirnae, but some of the tilesets could do with some curves smoothing off, such as the imperial arches and stuff like that

I am interested, but someone good at modelling please hear me:

The original armors need proper treatment! Better Armor mod to match Better bodies and Better Clothes. I am aware of hedgehog's better armors but they just are not similar at all to the vanilla armors. This should get included in a package like this as well!

There are some armor sets that have texture and/or model improvements available, but I agree that it would be nice to have a BB-compatible armor replacer that includes all vanilla sets. This would be a heavy undertaking for one person though.

No. Doing so would require two false assumptions. First that that "better" is a objective quality and not a subjective quality. Second that either removing undesired contented from a compelation or accepting such within the compelaton is less burdensome that downloading seperate pieces. Since neither of these condition can be met such a compliation isn't desirable.

But isnt that the same as the large texture packs? If you install a large texture pack for your game there are bound to be some textures people don't like.

So what do you do?

You either Delete them from the folder, or you replace them with something more to your liking.

If a mesh is just an improvement and keeps the same texture I.D. attached to it that's one thing. But mesh maker sometime change the id of the textures to unique names.

Although, as I have discovered, customizing collections of meshes like MW 2009 and Better Items II to my liking is a huge pain. *chuckle*
