Improved AI.... pleeeease

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:30 am

I don't know if someone at Bethesda reads stuff in this forum, but I certainly hope so...

I'm a big fan of the elder scrolls (or should I say oblivion, since it's the only game in the series I've played) and I'm looking forward to Skyrim sooooo much :-)

I've read all the reviews that are linked from the Bethesda blog and there is one thing that troubles me with skyrim :-( And I just wanna say, before i explain what my concern is about, that everything I've heard about skyrim (trough podcasts, previews, articles, interviews, videos etc.) sounds so awesome and it really seems that the game is gonna be great, but there is one thing....

....In a few of the reviews I already mentioned above, it could be read that NPC's don't really have a reaction when the player kills an NPC's ally during stealth (and the NPC sees his ally die!). In the previews I was told the NPC's only reacted by saying "I heard something"... This was the case with oblivion and one thing that I'ld really liked improved :-) I would like the NPC's to react like they know there is someone there and really search for you (or run away) or figure out where the arrow came from and attack in that direction immediatly.

I'm sure that you guys at Bethesda's got alot of work ahead of you to finish the game until november and I've no doubt that I'm gonna love this game, but I'ld really be thankfull if you spended some time to fix that "AI-problem" cause I think i would improve gameplay for stealth caracters alot :-)

So what do you other people think? Is an improvment of the AI important in this kind of situation (I'm not worried about the AI in other situations sense I got the feeling that they been working to improve that...)

Ciao!

I think there will be better AI.
"I heard something" might be something the NPC said to alert others, not like "the wind is blowing daedric arrows and fireballs at us, better just ignore it" like in oblivion.

AI is being improved, but I fear not to the extent that it will be as good as it could be.

Yeah, as I wrote I got the feeling they will improve it in alot of ways. alot of the changes sound really good. but if you read the previews I talked about you'll see they tell you that the AI in this one situation isn't that good, but I'm hope they're wrong about that :-) I think they could use Radiant AI to script a certain behavior for this kind of situation, just hope they do :-)

Yellow tags. Notice them.

As for improved AI, i think Todd acknowledged the problem implicitly in the excellent Gameinformer interview - a hallmark of excellence, really - when he mentioned the big to-do list regarding NPC reactions and interactions. It leads me to believe we'll be seing some moderate progress.

I'm confident that they're improved in Skyrim. Their AI is even more dynamic, so the NPCs will probably be one of the noticeably larger improvements in the game.
