Improved Snow/Rain Effects!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:41 am

On the other hand, it works as expected in TES III. Snow and rain are actual particles.

For TESV, I want some realistic particles effects.

I'm not sure as to whether in oblivion the snow effects were an after thought/last minute decision, but they sure look that way.

For it to look like that in skyrim, there is zero excuse!

something like this would be really nice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWrhzCZaBLw Just like what I'm dreaming of. Reacting to wind and building up on terrain/texture

Maybe the new guy responsible for it, didn't look at Morrowind carefully. Full 3D particles effects for rain/snow is actually odd. A post process shader is a more general approach. But now shaders can do particles as well, so I want some advanced stuff.

I remember Fargo, how snow particles were always on move 1 inch from the ground.

i hope they have bad storms like the snow gets so thick you can hardly see and the rain gets so strong that somewhere on the continent a flood happens or cool realistic stuff like that

I'm sure Bethesda has taken this into account. If they don't, the modders will.

Not sure you picked up on the slight sarcasm in my post.

they are designing the game for the xbox and ps3 so it isnt going to be that much different that oblivion in terms of graphics and physics. unless they are doing what reality pump did with their two worlds 2 game im just not holding my breathe for any spectacular improvements in graphics. thank god for mods.

i just hope they can work in shadows and realistic lighting this time around.

I disagree. The PS3/360 is much more capable of what oblivion dished out, especially 5 years later with more advanced/efficient software, game engines etc. Of corse the console versions will never look as good as the PC versions, but that's the nature of the beast.

I mean take WoW for example, that game was originally released in 2004, 2 years before oblivion and both next-gen consoles, and yet still managed to have better snow effects (also, they didn't go through stable roofs etc!)

Wasn't very impressive in Oblivion how when you stood in an outdoor stable, under the roof, snow and rain would fall through the roof.

I agree that's the first thing about the weather effects that needs to be improved, I could live without other improvements, although I'd say that in a modern game if Bethesda wants to impress us, they'll need to do better, but rain and snow passing through objects needs to be adressed. If Morrowind can avoid this with Morrowind Code Patch installed, the Elder Scrolls V has no excuse.

While I'd imagine that the consoles may limit what Bethesda can do somewhat, assuming they're not willing to *gasp* let the PC version have significantly better graphics than the console versions, if played on the highest possible settings, still, I'd say they can definately improve upon Oblivion in this regard, considering that other games on the same consoles have already outdone it.

Skyrim is most likely not going to be 100% snowy, as someone else stated earlier in the thread, it's based on scandinavia, and I can tell ya we don't have snow all year around ^^... Then again I really like snow so I'd like to see some frozen Tundras and icy wastes, which of course needs awesome snow effects...
Personally however I find rain to be the greatest weather ever, so I'd really like some mindblowing rain effects aswell :)

Yeah i agree. The snow and rain is 2D... So are the fire/flames and leaves, branches of trees. They're all 2D.

A big overhaul needed for deeper realism.

In Oblivion the weather effects were like an animated wallpaper that followed you instead of an object in the world.

this. And another thing bugs me is that older games than Oblivion like Guild Wars have 3D snow and other weather effects in them..

...and morrowind? A painful truth, unfortunately. MorroSnow was better than ObliviSnow.

It'd be nice to have better snow effects, and four seasons like somebody mentioned earlier, but that's not exactly at the top of my wishlist for the game. I want them to make the weather effects better but I'm more concerned with more gameplay related things.

I dont understant the point the video is making. You want snow that doesnt go through horse stalls? Ok that really makes a big difference.
