Improved Snow/Rain Effects!

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:32 pm

Anyone remember the, quite frankly, appalling snow/rain (especially snow) effects that were in oblivion?
Just incase you don't, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnst326b7gM

Now, if something needs to be improved upon/updated for Skyrim, it's the snow effects. And I really do mean need!.
For such a cold climate, where snow is likely to be a major part of the game and scenery, this really needs to be a priority.

I have high hopes that it will be adressed, especially with the new engine and such. But if not, I may cry!

I think we just need dynamic weather, look at how Red Dead Redemption did it!

There was a mod for Oblivion that added really cool storm and rain effects. The raid would seeminlg move with the wind like it were actually storming. Im positive we'll get some improved effects, if not hopefully we can mod them in :)

Wasn't very impressive in Oblivion how when you stood in an outdoor stable, under the roof, snow and rain would fall through the roof.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Especially since Skyrim is obviously very snowy, I'm sure they spent a good time on improving the weather.

I'm not sure as to whether that was down to the engine, or bad programming...

In anycase, for them to have the same quality of snow that was in oblivion would be unforgivable IMO. But I'm confident they won't!

Yeah I think anything graphical and weather effects are pretty much gauranteed to be improved

I think that weather effects will be vastly improved in Skyrim, especially with a brand new engine.

I've always noticed this - even if fully independent snow particles are too much, they should at least do something like shift the "layers" of snow/rain closer or farther from you as you walk, to give the illusion that you're moving into it. It'd be nice to have collision for precipitation, too - if the Morrowind Code Patch could do it, so can Bethesda!

Let's hope the new engine vastly improves weather effects.

Would be nice to see actual lightning bolts during thunderstorms.

Ooh my god. This is a bit off-topic but I think I go crazy. I found this thread very funny and laughed especially at this and the vid. And no I didn't smoke weed or anything.

Ps: No sarcasm, And yes the weather effects in Oblivion svcked hard!

I'm sure Bethesda has taken this into account. If they don't, the modders will.

Maybe it had a leaking problem? A very bad leak, pretty much everywhere... xD

You can go back and nitpick at it all you want, but for it's time, it was pretty impressive.

Hopefully this time the particles won't go though roofs and more weather effects.

I definitely agree with you, the Oblivion effect were pretty lack luster but as other's have said, snow will be an important weather effect for Skyrim so they should have revamped it especially considering they have a new engine to use - who knows what its capable of.

There should be physical effects for the rain and snow. I think that with snow falling for a time your horse and you will slow down because of the deep snow if it gets deep. I would want rain to get us wet and get the ground a little slippery. It should also have visual effects. Like a blizzerd along with the cold effects and the deep snow and wind you should not be able to see as well. I think it should have realistic effects that can also add sickness if you don't get a campfire fast enough after not being properly protected from your cloak/armor. A shield should also block rain too. :) I hope my ideas have helped. :)

I think we need to go one better.

See, Skyrim has a problem. It has been established in canon that Skyrim is, among other things, really, really cold. There's a lot of snow in Skyrim. Unfortunately, as many people have complained, snow is kind of boring to look at, especially when the entire world is covered in the stuff. And, honestly, this is kind of a shame, because Skyrim is based on Scandinavia, which in real life has http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/Geirangerfjord_%286-2007%29.jpg. It'd be sad to see all that buried under snow all time.

What Skyrim needs is seasonal weather.

I grew up in Canada, and as any resident of the "cold" countries can tell you, we really aren't a frozen wasteland all-year-long. Rather, northern countries have very mild springs and summers, but extremely long, harsh winters. While it would take work to implement, even just a basic switch making Skyrim snow-covered in the winter and not-snow-covered in the summer would go a long way to keeping the place feel like, you know, Skyrim without making it everything white all the time.

Yes, they must overhaul these effects.

Also physics for snow and water would be nessesary.

On the other hand, it works as expected in TES III. Snow and rain are actual particles.

For TESV, I want some realistic particles effects.

The first thing I thought of when I heard the name was WHITE, everything WHITE! Snow is lovely, but it will grow tedious playing for months in a snow field with log cabins and occasional rocks. Your suggestion is a very good one.
