Improving Immersion on console

Post » Wed Apr 16, 2014 4:58 am

Been playing this on PS3 for the past few nights and it's truly a superb piece of software. I'm just wondering if there are any tips in improving the immersion? I can't see any way to turn off the hud for instance?

Any ideas?

Unfortunately the only things I can recommend are further purchases beyond the game. Like the proper audio system, a properly calibrated and large television, a comfortable playing space and possibly playing in the dark so you are not distracted by things around you.

You should be able to lower the HUD in the settings.

You can, and it does improve immersion for a while. But I think that the HUD and no HUD both have their ups and downs.

Right now I'm playing without the HUD and WITH the music. I can't do without it.

How large are we talking here? Because if it's the large i'm thinking of then you may as well build a custom PC

As for immersion on consoles, the only thing you can do is make the hud more opaque.

Good point.

I ditched my console a couple years back and built a PC that I use from a couch. It was a good decision in the long run. :)

They must have been taking the piss when they left that bard in the game.

Some of the melodies hurt my brain after a while though, mainly the ones in town.

I suggest using some immersion techniques such as eating food on a regular basis. Renting a room at an inn for the night. If it starts to rain/snow look for shelter. In a cold zone put on fur clothing. When it is raining put on Leather armor.

If swimming afterwards carry a torch and mimic creating a fire to dry and warm up after a cold swim.

Maybe play dead is dead so when the character dies you have to start a new one.

Also, if you do lower the HUD, you won't be able to see your health bar. Although you can tell when your characters going to die by his panting, and the screen will go funny. Sorry.. I'm rubbish at explaining things.

But I honestly didn't miss the health bar, never really needed to see it. But that's me.

Umm.... wouldn't be in the options menu would it? No that would be stupid.

Anyway... things I do for immersion...

HUdless
No music
Only carry a realistic carry amount. (ie 1 sword, 1 dagger, bow and no more than 50 arrows)
No health/stamina potions allowed. Only use food to heal and no healing mid battle.
No swimming in full suit of armour.
Walk when not in combat.
No carrying more than 200 gold at any one time.
Camp at night, look for a suitable spot.
No using the local map
No looting enemies it makes no logical sense to loot ie Draughr.
Only pick up logical alchemy ingredients... so no carrying a giants toe in my pocket.
Use the appropriate weapon for enemy types, ie sledgehammers against dwemer bots.
Sheath weapons before actions ie lockpicking.
No 'waiting' to see what time it is. Look at the sky instead.

Same here. I connected my rig to my LED TV and surround system and LOVE it.

I think you've mistaken "realism" with "immersion." Some of what you have mentioned is neither realistic or immersive and contradicts itself. Eating only food would require you to be carrying more than a giant's toe's portion of food.

Ah yes! 60" LED over here. But I still think of my old desktop gaming days as if they were played on this same couch.
