Inappropriate clothing

Post » Mon Jan 24, 2011 8:55 am

I was watching a lets play of oblivion, and I the guy I was watching was just walking around in a necromancers robe. The only people that even commented on it were members of the mages guild, and all they do is comment on it. I read that if you enchanted them they won't even comment at all

To the point, do you think wearing or not wearing certain items should have an effect on disposition and other things? If so, how should it work in Skyrim?

When I read the title, I thought "sixy sleepwear?".

I think it should, it makes no sense wearing completely opposite organization clothing compared to where you are.

Yes they should care, if they can tell what you're wearing (or not) is inappropriate.

I think there should definitely be some acknowledgment of different clothing options, if they are obviously evil or whatever. But not to the extent of NPC's cowering in fear (Fable-like). It does seem wrong that somebody just walking around town in Dark Brotherhood gear would be treated the same as anybody else, but I guess that may just come down to more diverse dialogue.

(and I also thought you were talking about sixy underwear..)

Funny you mentioned it, After finishing the mages guild I was walking around in Mannimarco's robes with his staff in my inventory. I was walking around the imperial city market district and I took it out coincidentally as I was passing by this mage in white robes. I never attacked him, but for some reason he was threatened and attacked me first. The guards killed him but I thought that was a nice touch.

I think it would be neat to have multiple guilds that you can join in Skyrim that appose one another. Let's just say you and a member of an apposing faction pass by. A fight may occur. Maybe another NPC that is allies with your faction may join the fight? It can lead to interesting results.

This gives me another idea. Maybe there could be ways to disguise yourself as part of some other faction, and you would have to behave correctly for them to not find out. There could be NPC spies too.

You think someone might run or attack you if you wander through a city wearing Dark Brotherhood gear.
So.. add a disposition modifier for some texture paths?

Gah, I love these ideas. But I feel we are getting our hopes up because odds are they will not be implemented.

If they follow what was done in FO:NV, then putting on faction armor or cloths disguises you as a member of that faction. That can be good or bad as it allows you to infiltrate factions you're hostile with, but it also means friendly factions might attack you on sight, depending on the armor you wear.

I see no reason why they shouldn't, or wouldn't do that in Skyrim, also. Sure, the game was produced by Obsidian, but as the publishers, you know Bethesda kept a close eye on it.

I seriously was thinking, "Lingerie in Skyrim? Sign me up!" But then I read the OP and said, "Oh, right. That kind of inappropriate clothing.". Oh, and I agree with what you said.

I agree! More true to the topic title, if you walk around in your underwear, people should call you crazy and carefully avoid walking near you.

That means everything that modifies disposition cannot be enchanted. following a mesh and texture path means anything that uses, for example, the necromancer's robe appearance, would possibly make people mad at you. Or if you use the dark brotherhood look, you could attract unwanted attention and aggression from the guard for example.

The idea of a "Dark Brotherhood Armor" was stupid anyway. We're talking about an illegal murder society here... they shouldn't have uniforms. The black hand robes I could buy, for crazy get-togethers and meetings.

the 1 thing I would change from NV is that if you where the armor of a faction you were already aligned with, it would drop down to neutral, they need to change it so if you are on good terms with people and you were their armor you alignment to them still stays the same

A little off-topic, but I'm almost positive you're talking about Ontus Vanin, the retired Mages' Guild member. He's subject to a bug that makes him dislike Mages' Guild members, and that disposition drop is multiplied by your rank in the guild. Since you would have to be Arch-Mage to have Mannimarco's robes and staff, it's pretty much a given that he would attack you on sight, whether or not you had those items. So, unfortunately, that's not an example of NPCs reacting to the clothes you're wearing--in fact, the King of Worms' robes don't even cause guild mages to refuse to speak with you the way regular necromancer robes do (at least, not in the vanilla game).
However, I think this just highlights the need for that kind of interaction in Skyrim. It makes no sense for an encounter like this to be due to a bug rather than deliberate planning by the game designers, and there should be even more things like it.

So like the faction armor in New Vegas? I don't know about that. It was all right, but I don't think an organization that knows you really well should immediately become hostile just because you're wearing different clothes. They should at least recognize you up close.

I agree with this idea, some cloths should get different reactions from people. Just makes sense.

I think, if you are wearing a cloak or some such, people should not recognise your clothes to the extent of a disp. change

If implemented well, this would be very fun and immersive.

Oblivion maybe. But come on, that kind of thinking is so 200 years ago.

No, it should. The only thing that's holding this back for me is the fact that if I find a uberset to wear, I dont want to be chased on sight when the wrong kind see me.
