Incapacitation

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:47 am

For those of you who don't know about Incapacitation:

When you "kill" a player, (and you don't actually kill him, you "defeated" him, which you can see in any number of PAX East videos) he's not actually dead; he is in a state called Incapacitation, in which he cannot move, shoot or otherwise perfom any action (buffing, giving out ammo, etc).

While Incapacitated, he can choose to wait for a Medic (which will give an available Medic on your team a mission to come revive you in his Objective Wheel), or "tap out", which will respawn him at a friendly Command Post according to a looping countdown timer (you could wait anywhere from 20(-ish) seconds to only one, depending on when you are Incapacitated in the countdown's loop). If he is a Medic himself, he can take an Ability to revive himself (he gets no XP for succeeding though).

While you are Incapacitated, the enemy also has a few options too: Any enemy player can perform a melee "coup de grace" finishing move that forces you to respawn in the next wave, and they get a lot of XP for doing so. Enemy Operatives can use the ability call "Comm Hack" to interrogate you into revealing your teammates' locations to the entire enemy team for 10 seconds; they can see this mission on their Objective Wheel the moment you are Incapacitated (according to the Container City walkthrough preview), at which point it will be a race between your Medic and the enemy Operative as to who will reach you first.

Players also have a couple Abilities that work solely for Incapaciation: the first is the Universal Ability called "Downed Fire", which lets you fire your secondary weapon at a sever penalty (to accuracy, I believe); the second is the Operative ability called "Cortex Bomb", which apparently turns your head into an IED and explodes when you are Incapacitated.

So, how do you plan to deal with Incapacitation, whether you are the victor or victim?

If I find any enemy, I will just shoot him. I don't want to risk it. If it's me, I'll self revive. (add that option to the poll please)

Depends on how close I am, how close my teammates are, and how close his teammates are.

If I'm right there he's getting dead. If an Op is nearby and there are no other threats, that guy is getting tortured interrogated.

If there's nobody around and I'm not super close, I'm going fishing and he's the bait.

If an enemy is downed, I'll let him live as long as the area is secure, just so a friendly can interrogate him.

And the penalty for downed fire is a decrease in incapacitated health; I believe I read that in the compendium, might have been elsewhere though.

Added. Thanks, I completely forgot about that.

I was curious to see how people will deal with this, as it's not an often-discussed issue.

In my short time playing CoD: World at War, I've learned to never approach a fresh kill. Martyrdom, which drops a live grenade upon death, can easily kill a person who isn't 100% aware.

Upon a fresh incap in Brink, I'll wait a few seconds to see if he explodes/shoots back/gets Medic help. If not, I walk over and smash my buttplate into his face. If he's shooting back, I shoot back harder.

OR as a bait for enemy medics.

Personally I will use either the Cortex Bomb as an Operative or wait for a medic if there is one close .

Probably shoot most people, just to be careful. If I'm sure it's not an Operative though, and he isn't shooting back at me, then I might save some ammo and just beat 'em to death.

And "all of the above" for the second question. I like to switch things up a lot, so don't be surprised if I'm a Medic one match and a Soldier the next.

I'm the careful kind of person, so I will shoot him just to be safe (or let my teammates shoot him if I run out of ammo or something).

If I'm downed, I will want to get the Downed Fire ability. If I don't have it, then I would revive myself (because I'll be mostly a Medic most of the time).

If I was a Soldier class, though, (I'm going to be part-time Soldier), then I will either use Downed Fire or tap out if no Medic is nearby. I will
try to keep near a Medic, but that is not always possible, so I will do my best to keep myself in the game somehow.

during the first few days it will be interrogate/disguise, downed fire and cortex bomb should take some XP to unlock so not a lot of people should have it to start.. after that it will be hand gun city

Although we know that you obtain one Ability per level, it is unknown at this time what level requirements there may be for certain Abilities. We also don't know if there are prerequisites to some Abilities.

We'll just have to wait and see on release if nothing else (although I'd love to see a full Ability rundown release by SD before the game comes out).

When I play, I don't leave room for opportunity.

Downed opponents will have to face my Mini-gun.
As for me, I go out with a pistol or anything else that can be used while down.

I thought it was your secondary (which for Light would be the handgun). Trade off being a hefty penalty to (? I've heard accuracy and health being penalized, but no clear answer there).

Hey I never thought about calling out enemies to operatives. That's actually a good idea but most of the time I'll be bashing skulls with my SMG. Actually if he's close enough to his team, since I'll be playing engy I'll put a mine and a turret near him so they can kill any medics coming to get him. There's a possibility that I might have downed fire but that's only if I can't find a better ability.

Downed Fire allows you to fire your secondary weapon while incapacitated, but reduces the amount of health you get while downed. Haven't heard of any accuracy penalty though.

Secondary weapon is right but I never heard about reduced health. Accuracy and sight is reduced by being downed so you can't tell your team what is going on.

I think I'm going to play an engineer so every once in a while I'll let a downed player live but I'll drop a land mine ontop of him to catch a foolish medic. Once I unlock small body size I'll be run-by knifing.
