Include Console Interface on PC

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 4:25 am

I don't know if anyone on the design team will read this but if so would you PLEASE consider including the console 360 user interface as an option on the PC version of the game. I'd really like to buy this game for the PC since it will have better graphics and mods than what current consoles will have but I really like playing with an XBOX 360 gamepad instead of a mouse/keyboard.

I know that many (vocal) PC users scream whenever this is mentioned and say WHY would you want an "inferior" user interface but I MUCH prefer to play with a gamepad. So while I would not suggest disallowing mouse/keyboard... if it was possible to allow a user to use either the PC or the Console UI I think that would be AMAZING and I can't see why anyone would complain with having an additional option.

Please consider this. It would make a HUGE improvement to playing the game for me.

99% of PC gamers use mouse and keyboard, that's why.

I'm 99% sure that it will have console controller compatibility since it is a cross platform game by default and most games nowadays that are cross platform by default have controller compatibility, not to mention that Fallout 3 had controller compatibility.

Meh, I know alot of people that prefer to use a controller on the PC if the game supports it, unless it's a FPS of course then it's mouse and keyboard.

Exactly. I played Fallout 3 and New Vegas with a 360 controller on my PC. I'm positive that they would allow this for Skyrim as well. It would be silly for them not to.

I'm not really asking why it hasn't been done in the past. I'm just asking for the option. There are a lot more console gamers buying Elder Scrolls now than on PC. And I'm one "console" gamer that would play on the PC if it had a gamepad interface.

As long as it's optional, why not?

I won't be joining your on the controller, however.

Hmm....really? Man I hope you are right. Oblivion didn't allow for gamepad though correct?

What do you mean, a "gamepad interface"? Almost every PC game allows you to use a controller.

Oblivion also came out when the 360 was still a brand new console. Skyrim will definitely have xbox 360 compatibility.

I'm..confused your talking about Controllers or....Console UI on PC UI? for the avg pc player that would be clunky and space consuming, as Console UI are for people several feet away, now if you are one of those sixy Savants that do PC to Flatscreen TV in living room, why not?

No, it's not a FPS, it's a FP game, there is a big difference in the control type. FPS requires precision targeting which the controller falls short of my gaming mouse while a TES does not require precise targeting in split second reaction time.

That would be me

A gamepad interface is what you find on the consoles and it usually is a bit more complex than allowing an action to be mapped to a gamepad button. Take a look at Dragon Age as an example. The PC version is like impossible on a gamepad because you can't work the Hot bar at the bottom with a Gamepad you don't have enough buttons to map the each item. So they came up w/ the radial menu on consoles...etc.

Since the 360 gamepad is almost the official gamepad on PC and is official on XBOX I can't see why it's unreasonable to allow the 360s UI as an option on PC as well.

Yes, most games will have the console specific little options like the radial menu (for Dragon Age of course, not on TES hehe) However, Skyrim doesn't have that issue because you can do everything that you can on the PC on the controller.

Didn't they say hotkeys will be in the PC version? Otherwise I think the two interfaces will be very similar.

Yes, hotkeys will be in the PC version but it won't impact your playing with a controller.

Here's what I found for using a gamepad on Oblivion. It would be nice if it was a bit simpler to do than this:
http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/171418-how-to-use-a-xbox-360-gamepad-for-oblivion-pc/

Also I think movement speed needs to be adjusted when you go from mouse to gamepad. If you treat the gamepad anolog stick like a mouse you can end up w/ over sensitive movement.

It would be AWESOME if using a 360 gamepad was already configured in Skyrim so it just "worked", And since they already need to do this for the 360 version hopefully it wouldn't be too much additional effort.

I'm far more worried that PC Skyrim will have the same interface as console versions, unless there's some dev commentary out there indicating otherwise.

Morrowind had a great UI. I like Oblivion, but I hate the UI. Not being able to annotate my map especially chapped my ***.

I agree map annotations are cool. But I thought Morrowinds UI for text was TERRIBLE hard to read. I don't think Morrowind was perfection either.

Todd announced that the PC would be getting it's own interface. But I really don't get what people don't like about Oblivion's ui. It was smooth and it was organized, much more than I could say for Morrowind's "Oh look now I have to sift through the giant grid of countless items for the one I need" inventory. Just because everything is on one screen doesn't make it easier to find something, it in fact makes it take longer. In Oblivion I can just flip to Misc tab and get that one item I need and if I remember that I need to check out a weapon also, I flip over to weapons instantly and voila.

I liked being able to arrange Morrowind's UI windows however I liked, but yeah, there was still some sifting involved. I finally developed the muscle memory to navigate through Oblivion's UI quickly and without much effort, but I never really took a liking to its "widgety" feel.

If I had to choose between the 2, I'd rather go back to the Morrowind way. But that's just me.

Well, my major complaint about the Oblivion UI was, it was so big. It was made with people who sit six feet from their tv screens in mind. There other complaints bout the clunkyness of it all.

Morrowinds UI plus was that you had different boxes for map, inventory, stats and spells. Granted the inventory could become a little hassle filled when you had a lot of stuff.

On topic: The PC will have the console. simply because it's a very useful tool for modding,
