Individual Limited lives?

Post » Sat Jun 19, 2010 9:11 pm

Hi All,

Old Wolf ET player, been looking at this game for awhile now and already pre-ordered. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to setup individual limited lives on the servers. I found the old ET Pro mods where each person had a set number of respawns really made the game play much more exciting then only a beat the clock format. It also balanced out the zerg vs tactical type of gameplay and it makes you much more careful when you are low on lives.

I tried to search for this but didn't see anything.

Thanks.

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea.... Wouldn't mind seeing this as a game mode added in later.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah it was really awesome to have a set number of lives to play as you wish, super aggressive, or stealthy, it put a cost on objectives, how many lives must you chew through to fix the tank etc. It promoted even more teamwork as you had to switch playstyles mid game on how much you could risk. It made a good medic much more important so people wouldn't just tap out cause they know then can respawn over and over, and it also accented the smart players vs the not-so smart ones as they would waste their lives.

...and just for clarification it was individual respawns not a team pool, cause with a team pool you can get dumb people that wastes all of your teams resouces cause they are constantly zerging and racing back to the respawn pool.

I could see that being an optional feature for private matches or certain servers on PC but not as a default setting for multiplayer. Would lead to some pretty intense matches. The downside would be that if you lost your lives you would potentially have to spectate for a long time waiting for the end of the match. (more motivation for staying alive though )

Yeah, adds a nice tactical feel to the game. I wonder though, wouldn't that just force players to go heavy? For the most part, that is.

Or leave due to the waiting period. Depends on the gamers you are playing with. Easier to rage quit! Haha

It's a cool idea, and it could work with the normal campaign modes. It could raise the stakes and possibly have a higher exp payout than normal matches. I'm sure that in the future we might see some additional game modes and such.

Yeah, liking the sound of this too.
Who knows with enough interest it could happen in the future.

No no no. This would absolutely have no chance of working in Brink.

It would lead to people camping and not moving forward properly, together, as a team etc because they want to avoid dying.

I'm afraid I just can't see this ever working in the Brink that we've seen.

Hm,interesting, valid point i must say. It's something the more competitive part of the community would want,so i wouldn't mind if it's enabled as a server option.
This way all can be happy i guess.

I think we will know about this feature when server files will be available,no?

No doubt. They won't be able to camp as much as you can in ET:QW but, yup.
Some pathways are great for setting up camp.

I guess the point here would be to note that SD did a great job at making camping either 1-deathwishworthy or 2-beneficial and not useless.
This would be because of they way the maps are laid out. But just looking at the Airport walkways above the main lobby... camping heaven.

Edit: Good news Operatives, that just means more disguise fodder :)

Super intense matches where both sides are rage about the two campers in each team who don't do anything. :teehee:

Especially with Lights on Light-exclusive areas, yes.

Well I must say to the peeps that are afraid this will lend to camping, it will sorta, however you cant just just sit there and farm your enemies, because you have an objective and will have to be cunning to survive being outnumbered once the number of active players starts to dwindle. Besides you have to remember the clock is still ticking anyway, so you cant drag it out further then the game already would allow.

It really just adds risk to the game and consequence for your actions. It makes a person who has learned how to kill 10 people to his 1 death very valuable, makes tapping out a choice of strategy, instead of just wave after wave, musical chair, beat the clock type gameplay.

I played ET Pro for a long time and it was really awesome, one of the better respawn gametypes in a FPS that I have played.

CoD did it horribly, they gave you objectives, but objectives don't mean anything. It's way easier to just eliminate the enemy team, so the objectives get completely ignored. Not just that, giving everyone 0 respawns is too short and boring for the dead spectators.

I think an Elimination game mode with 4 respawns per player would be more exciting.

I agree with this and the minimization of respawns with a minimum cap of something like 4 or a 5 seems reasonable. Basically, it should be a number that represent, "if the other team ignored their objectives and just tried to kill me, how many lives would it take to complete the objectives if I focused on that. I understand the desire for no respawns... it raises tension and makes players focus more on their gameplay. I believe this solution would still provide that feeling.

Comments on this thread spoke to a similar setup and game mode.

It isn't a major thing for me either way, but I hope there's a "limited respawns" option when you're making custom matches - they can be fun.
