Ink removal

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:31 pm

Due to the fact that I chew all of my pens to the point of ink spillage, I can normally deal with ink pretty easily however a week worth of inky fingers have created inky finger prints on the bottom of my laptop.

Any ideas in how to remove them without damaging the laptop?

BIlly Mays said that Oxyclean can clean anything. He has never lied to me before.

Get some Oxyclean and a Shamwow. Double whammy.

Apparatus: Laptop, Tissue, A little water, Patience.

Step 1: Turn off laptop.

Step 2: Wet tissue paper.

Step 3: Rub tissue paper on laptop keys until ink stains are no more.

Step 4: Wait a few hours.

Done.

That is what I've done and that worked but it's the soft underbody of the macbook that remains stained after 30 minutes worth of cleaning.

Hmm, that might be a problem.. I know what you're talking about as I own a Macbook myself..

Maybe if you twist the end of the tissue into a little spiral so it fits between the keys? Or if you're adventurous, you could open your system up and clean it from the inside. Im sure there are guides on Youtube explaining how to go about that..

When I read the topic title, I was thinking you wanted to get rid of a tattoo... I was gonna tell you sandpaper... :hehe:

Getting rid of the ink stains will depend on the type of ink you're dealing with.
A soy or water based ink should come off with some soapy water, paper towels, and a little elbow grease.
If it is a permanent or indelible ink... you might have a problem.
Those types of inks are chemically formulated to be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to remove from the surface upon which they are applied.

If that is the case, you could try using an art "gum" eraser... but that will basically rub away the top layer of the surface of the plastic of the laptop case, and will probably leave dull blotches, and be just as noticeable as the ink stains.

Try nailpolish remover (/ isopropyl rubbing alcohol). Nailpolish remover will get rid of just about anything.

Bad advice.

Nail polish remover has acetone in it, and will dissolve the plastic (quite rapidly, I might add).

Rubbing alcohol might (read MIGHT!) work.... but I would test it on a small spot where you wont notice if it ends up dissolving the plastic, and I would have some water and paper towels handy "just in case".

Don't try Goo Gone, either.
It has petroleum distillates in it, and will dissolve plastic too.

Goo Gone is safe for most plastics. The plastic used on a laptop should be durable enough. Thinner and often transparent plastic may be damaged.
