Inquiry regarding use of interface assets from in-game

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2016 5:46 am

Hey there, I sent a mail regarding this question but got an automated response, figured it would be better asking here:

Hello there, my name is Alexander.

I have a rather short question regarding whether I am allowed to use in-game interface assets from Skyrim or not for a specific purpose.

Recently I decided to start streaming on Twitch again and figured I'd maybe stick to only one game for now, Skyrim. So I started making a nice overlay and some graphics using assets extracted from the interface .bsa archive within the game files. As I haven't commercially used them yet, I'd assume that's still perfectly legal, right?

Well anyway, so I was wondering about your policies regarding that, cause I am really satisfied with how it looks and think people would really enjoy the layout, as well as the stream itself of course.

Hoping to get an answer soon, thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Alex

No, it is not. I don't know why people believe this. Theft is theft. It is theft whether you make money off of your theft or not.

If I steal your bicycle and then give your bicycle away to someone else, does that make it legal? No, it does not. It is still theft. I have stolen your bicycle. The fact that I gave your bicycle away afterwards does not alter that fact.

If you do not profit from your theft it may mean that you pay less damages to the plaintiff in court when you are sued. But that is all.

I get your point here, but I've seen countless occurrences of virtual property being used with or without permission as long as credits are given and it's being used for a specific purpose relevant to the assets. Well, anyway, at least I cared to ask! But I still want to wait for a confirmation. :)

As far as I know you can only use those assets for the game the assets are made for. Bethesda might not own all the assets directly and only got a license to use them for the game the assets are in.

I doubt you will get a response here since Bethesda employees rarely post here. You could possibly pm Gstaff.
