Insanity! Powerball grows to 1.3billion

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 1:33 pm

So it's official, no-one won tonights powerball jackpot, and it has now grown to 1.3billion dollars, or an 806million cash out option. That is just so many levels of crazy....I mean whoever wins this, assuming it's just one person(and considering no-one won the 949million, it's reasonable to think only one person will hit this next one), you'd be richer then probably 90% of most A-list celebrities! It's honestly hard to fathom that much money, I honestly don't think I'd even be able to spend 10% of that by the time I died.

So who here is going to buy at least one ticket for a chance at the largest jackpot in the world?

I might actually buy a ticket or two. Damn. If one person won all that money.

svcks that they name the person/people who win. Family members come out of every hole possible and then there are the dangerous folks who start threatening for money.

Not for all states ^^ I happen to live in one of the 6(Delaware, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Maryland and one other that I can't recall). And I absolutely would remain anonymous if I won. Though me and my wife already decided that if we were the sole winners we'd take my parents and her parents and split the jackpot 3-ways. Then we'd tell each set of parents "You all can give money to the family, we're outta here".

The higher prize will attract more people and cause more people to buy tickets, increasing the chance of somebody winning and and the chance of multiple winners. Combound that by the fact that us humans are terrible at picking random numbers, the chances of two people guessing the same set of numbers is actually even higher.

So if you do play, get the system to chug out random numbers for you. It does a better job at it than you will for giving you a unique random number (as in not sharing the pot) though equal odds of actually winning as anyone else in the game.

you Americans and your overly ridiculous lottery sums.. what, a sum of 50 mill just isn't enough for you guys south of the border? you really need enough to buy yourself a micro nation? you greedy greedy people..

in all seriousness though, that is a ridiculous sum.. do you have to pay taxes on it (i remember hearing you had to for lotto winnings in the states.. we don't up here)? still though, i hope whoever wins trys to do at least a little good with the money, like give a mill to MS research or something..

Yes, Federal and, most likely, State taxes. The Federal tax is liable to be in the 25-28% range. State taxes very widely.

Gonna drop $20. 5 tickets I'll make my own numbers and the other 5 I'll leave to fate.

If I win I'll buy some land, probably ~10 acres, and put me a nice house in the middle of it. Not a mansion but a nice house with plenty of room for my kids to grow and play. Get my wife a crossover and me a pickup truck.

Ill go to college to learn writing and business. Afterwards I'd open my own agame development company.

A large portion of the money, like 90%, will go to a bank to collect interest. The interest will be split several ways. One portion is for me to live off of. The other interest will go to a couple of accounts where they will accumulate. Once a year I will empty those accounts and give it all to various schools, hospitals, and charities.

Federal tax on lottery winnings is 39.6% [Highest income tax bracket] (25% is withheld) so you'll owe money to the IRS later. Also state tax will need to be payed (up to ~9%). Many states don't have state tax for lottery winnings.

You'll net at least $444,626,000 after taxes (of 806 million dollar lump sum).

That's just insane. I think the largest a Canadian lottery has ever been was 60 million.

Yes. The cash value is 806mil. The govt gets their cut of 200m+.

If I win, the very first thing I'm going to do at work is put up a big poster that says:

Not only am I retiring from after 17 years, I am done

with the US Workforce permanently.

Everything else must wait. That above will happen first and foremost. The money would feel good, but knowing I wont have to work anymore would feel 1000000000000000x better.

Despite the mindset of "I'd probably never win anyway" that has put me off of the lottery, it was this that did as well. Winning the lottery would me a mind blowing experience, but just how much of that money is going to be yours when its all said and done. Though in this case, winning millions is nothing to complain about.

I've never bothered with the lottery before but uh, I suppose I could buy a ticket or two for this special occasion.

I was going to buy one yesterday but i forgot, it is amazing to see who will win this much money at the cost of just 2$. lol

I still think i have higher chances of making myself a multi millionaire some way then winning the lottery.

I will buy one, and if i do win then i am quiting my full time job. lol

The sad thing is, this jackpot is guaranteed to go up even more due to the hype it's producing. By the time the numbers are drawn on Wednesday, it'll likely go up to about 1.6-1.8bil.

I never get a single number any time I play but I have to try as things are tough and that kind of money would be a godsend now. If I won I would do something good with some of the winnings and not just take care of those I care about.

with that much money, you will join the ranks of needing bodyguards and an entourage when going anywhere and round the clock surveillance wherever you live. even the anonymous winners will not stay anonymous for more than a few day. you can bet that the store footage of the purchase will be aired nation-wide, and there will be investigators willing to invade privacy to get that scoop of the identity.

The winner better have some plan in place, it could be very messy!
