TF - Inside look at Dungeons

Post » Fri Feb 14, 2014 10:28 am

I don't know if this will break my NDA, but I tried playing these three dungeon during the beta. Our party managed to finish the dungeon but dying thrice on Fungal Grotto, thrice in Spindleclutch, and more than five times in banished cells (having incomplete party). A good challenge because there's a trial and error involved, and coordination between the party members is needed. Not the RUSH with DPS and healing power kind of thing some MMOs have.

I can't quite grasp this from the video posted, but I sure hope TESO developers played TSW's dungeons and try to gear theirs more in line with TSW's concept.

Interesting video. Nice to see some positive rather than the usual "Why no skyrim online" videos I've seen. Would have liked to have seen a little of the loot drops though. The groups I went with in beta didn't do too well.

Who knows really, I wouldn't expect them to make the very first dungeons in the game too difficult to complete.

I might have to go out and buy a Teddy Bear and put a big NDA T-shirt on it so that I can punch him around few times :)

If you compare this video to the development gameplay video from way back you can see how far this has come along especially the movement of the mudcrab boss. The dev video I think it was gamescon the mudcrab looked like it had very stiff movement in this video the mudcrab moved more fluidly.

That is a very well played group with players higher level than required to enter these dungeons (one is level 15). New players not knowing group mechanics will get face rolled and hard.

I doubt you'll be able to play this game through the higher difficulty levels without blocking.

Ya they made this look really easy, i have ran all those a few times and the spider one gives me the most issues, those darn spiders burrow under the ground and you cant target them till they pop.

Did you guys notice though how well formed those guys were, you didnt have people rushing ahead or hanging way back, that is one reason the guy had such an easy time healing, and the templar/archer was healing also. But ya they made it look like pre k dungeon running lol.

Groups of random strangers resulted in failure more often than success; I could not solo the dungeons, either.

You can probably go back and solo them later, of course.

Quote of the beta:

"Blocking works?".

WoW players are railing on ESO because it requires at least some small amount of skill to play. They're used to walking up and standing in front of an enemy and pushing buttons. There isn't a lot of reactionary gameplay in WoW. ESO keeps you on your toes. Blocking the Fungal Grotto boss power attack (the one shown in the earlier dev video) actually made the difference between dying instantly (on a character that did not choose any health points at all) and ducking out with 2/3 health.

Keeps you on your toes is the truth, i cant wait to see how it is later on, with the starter dungeons being like this i'm thinking OMG for the higher lvl ones lol.

Amazing. That post was up for about 5 seconds before I edited out and you STILL managed to quote it. Bravo.

I wasn't even using the Wow example for this game funny enough. I was referring specifically to a time in Burning Crusade long ago when myself and friends were in a large guild. We hadn't quite got into the raiding and were still going through the heroic dungeons. We formed a group with one raiding player (basically all this guy did was raid) and he out geared up my a mile. He ended up being completely useless because he had no clue how to do dynamic fights where you have to switch from dps to back up heals to off-tanking and cc'ing trash. He knew one thing and one thing only: his rotations for single purpose game play. Honestly it boggled my mind how this guy could get gear drastically better than us yet had nearly no clue how to play the game outside of one specific role in a raid where he could hide behind a dozen or more other players.

It is these sorts of players I fear the most entering ESO. They will have so many preconceived notions about how an mmo plays that will cause amazing grief for others when everyone is learning this game.

Honestly, how can anyone continue to be negative after this video and the MMORPG review.. It just shows how great this game really is. No one can now be honest and say that ESO is going to fail.

Big TSW fan here, I played one of the dungeons in beta and I have to say that I think the dungeons in TESO is tougher just as tough or in some cases tougher than the ones in TSW.

That's great to hear! What I really loved about TSW dungeons was that they were hard (i.e. first dungeon you play had harder mechanics than most WoW raids), and they had virtually no trash. I'm hoping TESO cuts down on the trash and gives us a bunch of tough, fun boss encounters.

There is many great things about TSW. Sadly the skill system and combat is so terrible I simply cannot play it. I LOVE the lore and quests.
