Install Sizes

http://www.ripten.com/2011/08/28/bethesda-confirms-that-skyrim-will-fit-on-one-xbox-360-disc/
From this Ripten preview on Skyrim we can see that Skyrim wont be on 2 (or more) disks. And they didn't get to know about the install sizes for 360 or PS3

http://www.destructoid.com/rage-xbox-360-install-is-22gb-208211.phtml
Also from this Destructiod preview on RAGE we can see that there's an optional install for better graphics and quicker load times for 22GB's.

Seeing how advanced both games are I would rather not spend ages downloading around a 22GB install for Skyrim that takes ages for better graphics and quicker load speeds, and its quite hard seeing how I only have a 20GB hard drive on my 360. This ends up with me having to buy a data transfer cable and a 250GB hard drive wasting even more money.

EDIT: I would rather it not like F:NV where loading screens take forever and graphics aren't at top quality.

In the end I would rather have 2 disks instead of 1 and a giant install.

Thoughts?

I'm a PS3 player with Blu-rays and a dirty great 250GB hard drive in my PS3 Slim so I can't say I'm much concerned. Only the really old PS3's might struggle with HD space, the smallest is 40GB.

Can't you use an external HD or something? They're dirt cheap these days.

I have a feeling a external HD has a limit to the size. Not sure...

It would be impractical for them to put it on two discs. The game is much too open to allow for that. You would be swapping out discs constantly.

Bethesda is using all kinds of new compression techniques. The actual game size is likely around 15GB

Theres 20 GB models out there it was around 08 they launched a 20 and 80 GB versions these were the last of the models supporting full backwards compatibility they got phased out a few months later. As for the install size its not really an issue for me I've got 35 GB free and can easil delete another 14 GB if I ever need it, I don't think skyrim will have that big of an install on the ps3 most of them are fairly small.

If you read the RAGE preview they say its got a 22GB to install which is already over my hard drive space and I think Skyrim will be just as big if not bigger. So I don't want to waste £150 on a 250GB hard drive and a data transfer cable. And from the reviews I've seen on these cables they say when they connect it to their PC they got Trojans and other viruses.

So when Skyrim comes out, after an hour of playing I notice loading takes much longer (like Fallout: New Vegas) So I decide to install the game, which takes hours and takes up probably quite a lot of hard drive space and I believe most gamers have taken up at least 3/4 of space for other games meaning they have to delete other stuff, so when they want something new they might uninstall the game but when they come back to it later they have to download it again wasting more time.

But other games like Mass Effect2 and L.A. Noire have multiple disks, which I think is much more helpful than huge downloads as those games I only remember having to change the disk like a few times which is even quicker than loading screens if your disks are already out ready to swap.

So in the end isn't having 2 disks more efficient and cheaper than huge downloads, unless its a psychological way of making us waste more money by buying more equipment to make gaming more speedy and enjoyable, possibly the reason why DLC is coming to Xbox first maybe because Todd Howard deliberately made it on one disk so Microsoft get more money via people spending money on hard drives and other equipment so Microsoft bribed Beth so they gave Xbox DLC first this way Xbox users get happy and buy more stuff, its like a cycle.

On Mass Effect2 and L.A. Noire there were multiple disks and they would change not so often; and when they did they did it during loading screens between 2 cells, so it wouldn't ruin gameplay or anything seeing how it only takes like 5 seconds to swap.

Dude don't worry the game is on one disc so it is less then 9GB of data (maximum for Xbox 360) I understand that is a lot for your hard drive. mine is 120GB but 2 Discs would not work, it is not like LA. Noire where as it is a linear game and ME2 is a more Story Driven game so you rarely go back to areas on the 1st disc. In skyrim you would have to swap discs multiple times just to go from Solitude to Riverwood.

How come RAGE takes up 22GB when installed for the Xbox, and I think its a maximum 9GB on a 360 disc because its compressed to that size but actually is a lot bigger when installed.

firstly it is 4GB of internal memory (not a hard drive) also no 250GB is the only one you get right now on the Xbox 360 S sorry

If you read that article though. Rage is 3 discs. 2 for single player one for multi. Two full discs and part of a third installed seems more likely on that one.

Rage is supposed to have some of the best Graphics on console also they are made by different developers and use different Engines. Don't assume they will be the same size just because Bethesda is Publishing both

You can't have a your cake and eat it too. I'm of the opinion that it won't be anywhere near 22gbs though. :)

I believe the 22GB is only for the single player discs which doesn't equal two 9GB compressed discs, which means there is extra space we are wasting when we can just have 3 discs for singleplayer instead meaning we don't have to download if the game is already good enough.

To be honest I don't follow RAGE but all I know is its a FPS yet it takes up 3 disks, yet it still doesn't play nearly as good if the game installed meaning it should really be put on 4 disks instead of wasting 22GB.

And Skyrim is an RPG open world game full of thousands of cells, weapons, detail, character creation, 150 dungeons, towns, NPC's, scenery, dragons, quests etc... I would assume it would be just as big if not bigger than RAGE meaning we would have to download it as it will probably like F:NV have long loading screens so we would have to install but I'm annoyed about how big its probably gonna be, even 10GB is too big when they can just split it on separate disks.

And even though RAGE is on 2 disks its considered to even run slow at some times.

I would've thought they would have done smaller ones to fit the slim, I think my mate bought a modded and reshaped version off of eBay which has like 120GB for cheaper than the 250GB.

I don't mind :P this way this topic keeps top so it raises awareness so people who have console don't rush and buy Skyrim realising its slow and irritating so they have to buy a larger hard drive to get the full enjoyment of the game.

Both of those games are extremely story driven. If Skyrim had two discs where you could install one and play off the other (Forza 3 style). There would be a say 9GB install disc and then the other disc also has 9GB of data on it (both estimates of data). That way, it could be under the minimum hard drive space available, and run very smoothly without sacrificing graphics.

But if there were more disks there wouldn't be a reason to install if the game wouldn't go slow or decrease the graphics.
