Installed a new GPU - getting failed to initialize renderer

Post » Thu May 01, 2014 9:19 pm

So I've just installed a brand new Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB to my rig and installed and updated fully the drivers for this card and im recieving an error saying "Failed to initialize renderer: Your display does not support the selected resolution".

I have trind alot of things to try and fix this error like changing the skyrim pref file so that the isize h = 1080 and isize w = 1920 and the bfull screen = 1 and set it to read only, i still got the error, i even tried changing this in the launcher without the file being read only, still did not work. another thing is that i try windowed mode and i get a similar error saying that it does not support windowed mode either.

I have also tried deleting skyrin pref and default and validating it through steam, the files came back and i ran the game through the launcher, it autmatically detected my graphics and set it to ultra and i tried to run it but it still didnt work.

The final thing i tried was reinstalling the game to see if it would run the directx installation again but it didnt, i was thinking this may be the problem but im not too sure whether it is direct x or not. i really need help fixing this as im looking forward to playing this game with modded HD textures.

Have you removed the old video drivers?

When going from ATI to Nvidia, or vice versa, you sometimes have to use something like Driver Sweeper to clean out the old video card drivers. Usually it is best to do this before you install the new ones

What monitor(s) are you using? Are you using multiple monitors? Does the launcher see the new card? Can you select the resolution in the launcher?

Im using an AOC monitor that does support 1920x1080 because i used to use this resolution on my old graphics card. Not using multiple monitors. My launcher has already detected the new card. and i can select all resolutions up to 2560 x 1440.

Did you clean the old drivers out? Not just Uninstall them, but use the program linked above to remove them?

After wiping the drivers, you should reinstall the new ones and wipe the INI files.

Definitely odd. You can try running the dx10 dist in the main Skyrim directory. SHould be in the Directx10 folder.

Are you using any mods at this point? SKSE, enb series, etc?

Might try reinstalling the monitor drivers/inf file.

Using quite a few mods and SKSE, also tried running DX10 and that didnt solve it, this is so messed up.

What's you monitor model exactly ???

fi you set it at 1680x1050 ???

------------

Open up your skyrimprefs.ini (in my games\skyrim) find the setting:

bFull Screen=

Make sure it is set to 1.

-------------

Before all the above... The two files that are located in - documents>My Games>Skyrim folder. Both files SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini are they read-only ????

If yes, uncheck the read only box from both files and try again. !!!

While a mod should not be a cause for this, at this time, it's your best troubleshooting step to eliminate those as contenders for root cause. Either do a reinstall making sure you delete all local content before installing again, or see this to remove the mods you have
