installing Daggerfall on a mac

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:50 am

So, any chance anyone can give any instructions for installing and running Daggerfall in OSX? Dosbox will run on a mac, so I assume it should be possible to play Daggerfall on one.

Check that out, I give instructions for a Mac. And it will work, since I have been playing it a lot :D

If you have any questions just ask.

Thanks, though I'm still having trouble. I guess my main problem is my inability to figure out how to fake a c: drive on a mac. I've made a dosgames folder, and put DFinstall in it, but is there something I'm missing. I guess I still don't know what I'm supposed to do with the folder after I've made it.

If you've put the dosgames folder in your user folder, then mount it using "mount c ~/dosgames -freesize 1000".

Thanks! Now I just need to figure out how to edit dosbox.conf

(Yeah, I'm an idiot, but unless someone explains everything to me like one, I'm hopeless figuring anything out with dosbox it seems.)

okay, so I've got a Dosgames folder, with DFinstall in it, which I've placed in the user file on my hard drive, then I enter "mount c:\dosgames -freesize 1000" in dosbox. I get a message that says

"Usage MOUNT Drive-Letter Local-Directory
So a MOUNT c c:\windows mounts windows directory as the c: drive in DOSBox"

Is that right? Because from there I try to emulate the cd-rom, so I type "mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall"and when I do that I get a message saying "Directory c:\dosgames\dfcd doesn't exist."

Arrrggh. I don't seem any closer to actually getting a chance to play the game...

Double Arrrgggh. Evidently I didn't even get the c drive mounted, because when I type c: in dosbox I'm told there is no c drive.
edit: nevermind, got the c: drive, but still keep getting doesn't exist messages

Go back, look at my post, and compare what you and I typed when mounting the drive.

And hopefully this is self-explanatory and you haven't been doing it, but just in case; don't type the quotation marks in DOSBox.

Edit: Nevermind. Just do this in DOSBox:
mount d ~/dosgames/dfcd -t cdrommount c ~/dosgames -freesize 1000d:install

If that doesn't mount then the "dosgames" folder isn't in your user folder.

Thanks for the help. Here's what I'm getting now. I have c mounted--here's the message I get about that

"Drive C is mounted as local directory /users/username/dosgames/"

but when I try and mount the d drive by typing "mount d~/dosgames/dfcd -t cdrom" I get a message saying "Directory c:/dosgames/dfcd doesn't exist"

edit: Wait, I've got it, installing now. Thanks again.

...

That's because you're omitting a space between "d" and "~/dosgames(etc)"

Well now I'm find new problems. Evidently I don't have enough space on my hard drive to install the game, which seems odd. Its only 450 MBs or so, isn't it?

That's what the "-freesize 1000" extension is for. You are telling DOSBOX "I want to mount ~/dosgames as a virtual C drive with 1000 megabytes of free space."

So close! Now I can't seem to run the patch. I've gotten as far as "C:/Dagger>" but when I type in "dag213" and try to run the patch, I'm told "illegal command: dag213"

Every single question you asked is answered in the download I linked you to...

Something is apparently wrong. Is there even a dag213 in your Dagger folder?

I'm also having problems with installing this too (I'm using a Mac). For some reason Dosbox seems to think that "install" is an illegal command. I've done the first 3 commands properly (I think) so I don't understand what going on. Any help would be appreciated.

... we need to know what you have done.

When you typed install did it say "D:\>" or something else?

well, I finally managed to get the patch to run (I followed someone else's directions from somewhere else and added an extra unnecessary folder that was confusing stuff), but now I'm getting a message saying I "inserted the wrong cd. Please insert your Daggerfall CD in your cdrom and try again."

So I guess that means I'm not mounting the d: correctly, or something like that? how do I mount d: so that it acts like the real cd?
2nd try:
Dang. Reinstalled, thinking I might have got it right this time. Installed no problem, ran the patch with no problem, but when I type "dagger" to run the game, I'm told I've got the wrong cd inserted.

Update: okay, got it working. When I mounted D with
mount d ~/dosgames/dfcd -t cdrom

I get the wrong cd message, but if I

mount d ~/dosgames/dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall

it works. Just thought I'd share, in the off chance someone else has the same problem.

Well, I mounted Drive C and Drive D, typed in D: which replaced Z:\> with D:\>, then I typed "install" and it said it was an illegal command.

The second is exactly what Bethesda tells you to do. Also, it is exactly what I told you to do.

D is the emulated CD drive, I am pretty sure you need to install with the emulated hard drive (which would be c:)

Well, all my early problems seem to have been the result of some directory confusion on my part. Somehow I ended up with more folders than I realized, which screwed me up when I was using your instructions. Once I got those cleared up, most of the instructions I got regarding mounting D: failed to include "-label Daggerfall" (see earlier posts), so yeah, it took me going back to your instructions to figure that out. Just thought I'd point out, just in case, that anyone having trouble with a "wrong CD" message also forgot to add "-label daggerfall"

When people make their own folders and start trying to use differing directions, it creates confusion. I suggest using the folders the instructions tell you to for anyone reading this.

It shouldn't matter either way. I had no troubles mounting dfcd with no CD label, nor have I ever had to do it with any other game.

Huh. Weird. I didn't think it would matter, but I can't figure out what else I could possibly have done wrong. It would mount without "-label daggerfall" but the only way I can seem to get it to recognize dfcd as the correct disk was if I added the "-label daggerfall"
