"Installing: Microsoft VC Redist Package (step 1 of 1)&#

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:42 am

When I launch RAGE from Steam, one of those windows pops up asking if you want to allow the program to make changes. After I click yes, a little steam box pops up saying ""Installing: Microsoft VC Redist Package (step 1 of 1)". But it only stays for a second before it disappears and proceeds with the game launch. Could this be something the game needs and it isn't installing? It seems like these MS redistributable packs are usually fairly lengthy installs.

I see this and the problem is that the VC redist that shipped with the Steam version of the game is older then what recently came out with Windows Update and it fails to run because it is a older version then what is installed on your machine. You can see this by running steamapps\common\rage\msvc2010\vcredist_x86.exe.

I have opened up a support ticket with Steam about this.

I tried to manually create the registry keys that make it look like it ran correctly but failed to do so...

I own 167 games on Steam, and when a game performs the "First Time Setup," Microsoft DirectX installs and so does Microsoft VC Redist Package. If you have the latest version of Microsoft VC Redist Package then the "First Time Setup" window should almost instantly flash and finish. It won't need to reinstall if it detects a newer version. VC Redist won't be the cause of lag, stutters, screen tearing or texture pop-ins. It's confirmed that it is a driver issue that's why AMD owners now have a fix and are able to play, because of the new driver. And of all my Steam games, the VC Redist is the fastest one to finish, DirectX takes the longest every time without fail. Don't be worried, it installed fine :)

Ummm the VC Redist runs everytime I launch the Game. When I run it manually from the steamapps\common\rage\msvc2010 folder it displays a big red X and says:

Setup has detected that this computer does not meet the requirement to install this software. The following blocking issues must be resolvedbefore you can install Microsoft Visual C++ 2020 x86 Redisributable Setup software package:

Please resolve the following:

A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributable has been detected on the machine

Yes this has nothing to do with the performance problems people are seeing but it is annoying to have this launch everytime I start the game...

Hmmm... Have you tried Verifying Integrity of Game Cache and Defragmentation Cahce Files? If that doesn't work then a clean reinstall would be the only thing else I can think of. I'm sorry if you have to resort to that :/

The solution is to ship a newer Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redist in a future Rage Update.

Windows Update has been shipping out newer updates for this recently because of security issues. I could uninstall the Windows Updates installs, run this, and then reapply the windows updates but I am too lazy...

I am running 64 bit OS but I don't think that has anything to do with it. And I have seen other people with this issue on the Steam Forums..

I'll wait to see what Steam says...

If people are running into this and when they manually launch vcredist_x86.exe they get this:

Please resolve the following:

A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable has been detected on the machine.

Then you can do this because you already have the newest VC++ redist

Open Regedit and move to the following key

64 bit OS HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve\Steam\Apps\9200

32 bit OS HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\Apps\9200

Then create a REG_DWORD value called MSVC and set the value to 1. You should also see a DirectX REG_DWORD with a 1 there also.

Now Steam will not run this everytime rage launches.

Does the same to me with the simple difference that the freakin game won't start up. Anyone got a clue why that would happen?

It shows me playing RAGE for a few seconds and then not anymore. I looked it up on the task manager and it seems to be loading up and then shutting down immidiatly for some reason.

Enable VSync on your video card to Application controlled. your game will start after that.
