Installing to HD other than the OS HD

Post » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:15 pm

Hi,

I just bought Fallout - New Vegas and was kinda surprised that during the installation I wasnt even offered the option to choose the drive and folder where to install.

I have a brand new computer with a rather small SSD drive that cant really handle this size install.

Any way to install this to my secondary drive where i have installed games so far?

As it is now, doest seem I can even install the damn game even though I have a 1TB drive as the Data HD.

Any help/tips would be appriciated!

Uninstall steam and install it in the drive you wish to install New vegas in. It doesnt offer you the choice to change install location because it goes into the steam folder, so if you install steam into another drive, thats where the game will be installed.

It's more than possible to move Steam to another location anywhere on a computer, it's simple as a drag and drop, there's more info on how to do it on the Steam website.

Ty for the fast replies both of you.

Seems to be corrected now. Though from the looks of the other topics in these forums seems its going to be buggy as hell to play this game :/

I have Steam/games installed on my HDD, but TF2/FNV both run off my SSD.

If you have never heard of/used junctions, you may wish to try. It's perfect for SSDs. You can delete the SSD files to save space, leaving the HDD install fully intact. This way it's as simple as coping the game of choice from it's HHD home to the SSD whenever you want the speed of the SSD then just point a junction to the SSD from the HDD.

http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

Let me do a quick guide as what's on that page is convoluted for what you want to do.

Install that linked program.
Install game/Steam/application to the HDD.
Copy the files you want to the SSD. (I for example went into Steam\steamapps\common then copy/paste the fallout new vegas folder to the SSD. Leaving Steam to run off the HDD.)
Rename the original HDD folder for easy recovery. I just add 'old' to the name. (It can be deleted if the junction works.)
Then right click the SSD files folder, drag to the original HDD location then drop. A menu will pop up. Select 'Drop as' and choose junction.

Now go start the game. If you Ctrl+Alt+Del to the Processes tab in Device Manager and select 'open file location' in the right click drop down you will see the game is now running off the SSD even though it is installed to the HDD.

Every SSD owner should know about and use this if you ask me. Now that I am board with TF2, I can delete the SSD files, yet simply copy them back from the HDD install should I decide to play again. Too cool!
