Installing tes4gecko on windows xp 64

Post » Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:14 pm

My previous install of oblivion was on a windows xp 32 bit machine, and installation of gecko on that was easy as anything (heck i didn't even bother with the shortcut and just clicked the jar file anytime i needed it). I have tried going the proper route this time fiddling with the shortcut after just clicking the jar file wouldn't work and I still get the same error. The basic error is that whenever I click the jar file, the program says that it can not find the oblivion installation directory (which for me is C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks). I have the game installed and working and all of that, so I assume that the program is just looking in the wrong spot for my oblivion install. I imagine this would have something to do with the registry and something being out of place there.

I assume many others have already figured out how to make this work, but being the dunce that I apparently am, cant seem to figure things out at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated,

I'm not at home at the moment but have this on a 64 bit vista system with 4GB of Ram and it works so much better than 32bit. Huge files can be merged. I will copy the details and post them tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your help ^_^ i had no doubts that this would work on xp 64 but just needed some instructions on how to get it to work. Hopefully i dont have to uninstall and reinstall the game in a different directory (something i had considered).

Well I have managed to open up the program now, cant say whether or not it works because I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet. What I did to get this far was to create a New registry key and string value in my regular program files folder and put the information in there.

For a hopefully clearer picture, let me explain. When installed on my xp 64 machine, my string was at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethedsa Softworks\Oblivion and inside that key was the string value Installed Path with data C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\

The information is correct (for my machine) but gecko is looking for it in the wrong place. Gecko is expecting to find this information in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE (without the Wow6432Node) so what I did was create a duplicate key for oblivion in the place where Gecko is looking for it (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethedsa Softworks\Oblivion). I created the key and then created a string value in that key with the name Installed Path and with data C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\.

Hopefully this is what you were going to tell me thekarithian, or if you have another way, please share. Hopefully this helps other people with the same problem if this actually works out right. I need to go install some mods to merge first to fully test but i see no reason why this wouldn't work at this point.

I'm on Vista (actually more of a headache than XP 64) it never was an issue with it being 64 OS or not or about Reg keys - it is a shortcut target naming issue most likely. The Gecko is the readme is wrong.

My Oblivion directory is I:\Oblivion Extra.

The shortcut target for Gecko I have is:

C:\Java\bin\javaw.exe -Xmx1200m -jar "I:\Oblivion Extra\TES4Gecko 15.1\TES4Gecko.jar"

The part in blue is the part where the readme states . The readme misused the quotes making it confusing. The quotes start where the install directory starts not at the beginning of the entire target as in the Gecko Readme.

I recall having to extract Gecko to another folder then create the final folder for what it resides. If that is not enough or you need more detail let me know. I think I have a thread link .... http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1068317.

I tried the same method you did for the shortcut (among many others) and I got no love at the time, don't know why. Either way it seems to be working well enough. Good to see you again Psymon ^_^

Thanks again for everything,
