Instead of console creation kit....

Console download manager? Bethesda selects some of their favorite user created mods that won't affect consoles and allow console users to download them in Skyrim's "Download Manager". Obviously Microsoft and Sony would not want players to recieve free add-ons, so they need to cost money. Bethesda asks the creators of the selected mod for permission to use this mod, and the creators eon't recieve any money. That way if the creators say yes they don't care for the money and would want anyone to use their mod. The console people download the mod and enjoy. Of course, mods like graphic enhancers, ect. won't work on consoles so that's why Bethesda selects them.
I like this idea because let's be real people.... Console Creation Kit isn't happening... MS/Sony don't want people breaking/tampering with their systems. But downloading is different! It's just a Bethesda-created Marketplace.
The modders get more fans, people love Bethesda even more, console players enjoy the amazing ideas of TES PC fans, and MS/Sony get money. Everyone is happy.

Create a netflix like app for TESNexus or Planet Elderscrolls that can be purchased from the 360 or PSN for a one time fee of $15. The app will be a database full of user created downloadable content that has been monitored and filtered as appropriate for the M rating. Each individual mod is free the service is a one time fee. Everybody gets what they want.

Edit: Redundancy are redundant.

This /\ Thats the only possible way console players could get mods, BUT its very unlikely/ impossible to happen in Skyrim. Maybe TESVI

Sigh.

  • Ensuring compatibility between mods
  • If like Oblivion, Third Party tools (SKSE, Wyre, SKMM, TESVLODGen)
  • Access to file structure
  • Legal issues (Custom Meshes, Textures)
  • Issue of Content (advlt Mods)
  • Logistical Issues
  • Hardware issues (Xbox has what, 512MB of RAM?)

Mods on consoles are not happening in this generation, if you wanted control over your system you shouldn't have bought a console.

Edit: Formating

Why are you guys bringing money into this? PC mods are free why should console gamers pay for them?

"Mods on consoles are not happening in this generation"

It happened on the Dreamcast with 4x4 Evo and on the PS3 version of Unreal 3. Hines said they know it works, they just dont know how to control it since this game is bigger than some racing or FPS game.

I don't call a map editor mods tools.. Changing ini files and creating new maps with tools already in game is modding but your not introducing new textures or changing the majority of the code to change it and implement entirly new features. So ya, with 256mb ram and a poor GPU it is a wise decision to let Beth do all the work because they know the specific specs and what they are limited too which result into DLCs

In fact, I would even go a step further.

I would recommend as many gamers as possible to drop consoles and switch to PC. The way that things are going, multiplayer will cost extra in games. I am not kidding. You will have to buy the game, pay for the miltiplayer dlc, and pay for the ability to play multiplayer on you console.

The fact that players are constantly having to pay extra for things that used to be included in a game is absurd.

Switch to PC and be done with it.

If the work was made freely by its creator, it should be freely available to his intended audience. The online store should not charge for free mods. Maybe a premium mods program (a la Neverwinter) where the creator gets paid for their work; that would be fair.

Even if the issues were overcome they'd still cost money for console players because Sony and Microsoft are hosting files and using bandwidth which costs them money they charge devs for items such as demo's there was a story a year or two back of a demo being pulled because it was costing the devs a lot of money something along the lines of 25 k a month because of the amount of downloads it got, no one is going to just eat that cost and it would take some money to set up the system for evaluating and setting the mods up for download again no one is going to just eat that cost and then of course most modders would want to get paid if they could, assuming the technical and logistical issues were solved I think we'd be looking at paying a nominal fee or having them bundled and sold in something aking to dlc that we have today.

Xbox 360 controller on PC: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver/dp/B003WFYZCY
PS3 controller on PC: http://www.motioninjoy.com/download
Tons of other controllers on PC: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=402047011

By the way, with almost any newish video card you can connect your PC to a tv via HDMI or DVI.

So tired of the misinformation...

Personally, as a PC user, I think this is a great idea, and theoretically could work. There are some problems though.
  • All mods are made for PC, and many of these are in that case optimized for the PC (eg, larger textures, keyboard inputs, dependance on RAM to make them load). Most mods are like this.
  • This method depends on Bethesda to create a viable in-game digital-distribution center, which is possible, but would take up a large amount of Bethesda's resources - which could be spent making a better game.
  • It also depends on Bethesda to contact the maker of each mod that you deem "favorite" (many people have different favorite mods as the variety of mods is so large now, for Oblivion anyway), then test the mod to work on BOTH consoles, and then have MS/Sony test if it doesn't break/tamper the system. To do all of that effectively, I imagine there would be a whole new department made to manage that.

BUT - it is possible, and a limited selection of mods would work.

...However, the trouble involved... wouldn't you rather just get a PC ($500 will get you one better than a x-box 360 or PS3, plug in a controller and its exactly the same controlling wise, but will last longer, cheaper in long run and is overall 5x better) or wait for the next-gen consoles (and mods will only probably have a chance on next-gen consoles).

How hard is it to pick the best mods, have a few people test/approve them, and release as free/cheap DLC?
If they do that maybe once a year, it would be awesome. And if one or two good mods conflict with another, they could patch the game/get permission to slightly change the mod.
Hell, smaller mods could probably be included with a title update.

One bad mod ruins your gaming experience. Perhaps if downloadable console mods were limited to new items, armors, improvements on in-game content like character mannerisms that might not make sense, more character customisation options like hair and eye effects, a new fully functional spell effect that is not game breaking, etc. Screenshots of the items could be posted on the download page on the marketplace for each, with a rating by users. That way you get to see what you are considering putting into your game. The downside is that a server costs money to run and maintain. Administration has to be done by some one responsible. And no one really wants to pay for access to free content.
