Instruments are in Skyrim!

If barding is viable, I am heading to the Bard's College.

With 2nd character in mind.

Just another one of them small details. Remember back in Oblivion days when so many people was happy to see paintings? Its like that - in a way.

If I was going to be an assassin type character, I would play a song for each of my victims before extinguishing them later.

Should we be worried? Just a little sadistic :cryvaultboy:

Personally, I would like to see the resources be spent on other aspects of the game. For me mini-games like this add little value to a game as they are fun for about 5 minutes. Plus it has been done in Fable III and in Two Worlds II, id rather see original things in Skyrim.

I hope that instrument will be usable for the player(and npcs), but I think it is too soon to claim something as proof before Todd Howard/Bethesda confirm it.

I think it would be fun to have playable instruments using an ABC player as in LotRO. Having NPCs throw a few coin your way and maybe some way to indicate improving technique (more applause, better tips, access to better instruments) would make it fun for those interested in having playable instruments in the game.

Hey now, they do make good arrow fodder.

On a more serious note, there's three outcomes into making this player controlled.

1. It's a simple system with little depth, people complain that it's simple and gets modded.

2. It's a very in depth system, but as such it requires a lot of development time from the sound artists, coders, animators, etc where the effort could' have been put towards more pressing matters.

3. It doesn't exist outside NPCs and someone mods it in.

Really, 3 seems to be the best option.

I don't think we'll be able to use them but there's some good modding potential there. :)

Either way it's cool that it exists for the NPCs.

If its not in the game to begin with, some one will mod busking into the game and play with the lute. If you build it they will come.

You can be sure about that.

Great movie!

In that case have you heard of Journey Quest? It has a lot of the same people in it, and another bard (although a lot less accident-prone).

After watching Dorkness Rising and Journey Quest, I know I'd certainly at least like bards to show up even if I myself can't play any instruments, and if you could get a bard companion, I'd be in for some real good laughs :violin:

Okay, but it becomes a lot more complicated when it becomes a user action. How do you control the instrument? Are there many buttons for all the notes your instrument can play? Does a console controller have enough buttons to support this? Do you simply click on the instrument and it plays a random song? Do you pick from a list of songs? Where do you learn new songs? Can you make your own songs? etc..etc..etc..

Adding an NPC behaviour that just plays a random song is not nearly as complicated.

Good god dude. You don't have to play the goddamned instruments.

By your argument, Nintendo should never have added the Ocarina as an interactive feature, they should have just had a few preset songs that NPCs would play. In fact, they shouldn't have even let the player use it at all.

Face it dude, your argument is bull. It relies on the unfounded assumption that a feature being complicated means that it shouldn't be added, which by the way, if you follow to its logical conclusion, means that you are in support of Skyrim being merely a game where you press the "A" button when the game starts, after which you watch a cutscene and the game is over. There, now it's uncomplicated, thanks for the 60 bucks.

If they are adding woodcutting and farming, then musical performance wouldn't be out of place and would add to the roleplaying atmosphere.

I absolutely hate the idea of having a minigame and being able to play the instruments. I would love for NPCs to play instruments in taverns, but anything else I am thoroughly against. Except maybe being able to combine it with dragon shouts if you were to play as a bard, but that would just make the game too uneven....

Nintendo built Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask) with the Ocarina as a large part of the game from the very conceptual beginning. Of course it would have been flexible. That large-scale utility due to importance will not be the case in Skyrim. There is always a limit for things to be added, always a line dividing central-thematic-elements from nice-but-not-essential-or-necessary. And recognizing that does not imply the recognizer wants a Skyrim that is Press A to Win.

I could see that being really cool to interact with NPCs through playing an instrument, but I don't see it being a very practical skill to have. Great mod idea, though.

Instruments would add very little to gameplay. If you want to jam out, go play guitar hero.

Oh not another idiotic post.

There are a great deal of things that add little to gameplay in skyrim and other games in the elder scrolls series. You wouldn't suggest someone go play the sims if they wanted to have their own house in an RPG would you?
