You're doing it via Dosbox, correct?

If thats the case, then when mounting the C drive to whatever you put, you need to put -freesize ##### afterwards, like:

mount c c:\dagger -freesize 1000

That should tell the game that you have 1000MB on your hard drive, I don't think it is necessary to put a high amount all the time- as I think the default is 63mb, which is enough for the saves and such.

It's strange that this is necessary for those of you playing in Windows. I dosbox it in Linux, and it just plain works without edits, without specifying hard drive size or RAM, or anything like that.

The size thing is only needed once, when one install the game within DOSBox.

Specifying the RAM isn't needed either as the default value is 16mb which is enough to play the game. But the game wants some more RAM so increasing it to 32 or 40 improves performance.
