Intelligent super mutants and talking Deathclaws!

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:22 am

Bring those awesome Companion ideas from Fallout 2 into the future which is Fallout 4. I know that fallout 2 was Interplay and Black isle but still... that stuff was solid. A remnant of the masters army from the first generation of super mutants. Still able to carry on a conversation without sounding like the incredible hulk, or deep voiced child barely able to form words. Marcus was my number one homie back then. It would have been Goris but he didn't have the talking head. Seriously, the thought of Marcus and that mini-gun brings back the fondest of memories. Although the talking Deathclaw in the room should always be acknowledged, unless breathing is of little importance. The idea put into Goris and his entire pack was incredible. Just imagine that runt Deathclaw that was experimented on is able to talk perfect English, and then you get him as a follower. He walked around in monk like robes and when combat began he threw them off and whooped A**. When Marcus was put into Fallout New Vegas I was jumping for joy. Until I found out he wasn't a follower and I wanted to punch the devs in the face. Don't get me wrong I love everything fallout that has ever been released. It would just be nice to see some non human/ghoul/robot companion that can form proper sentences. Fawkes and Lily were cool, but they fell short of the mark.

Btw which brain did you choose in the sierra arms depot?
Sincerly,
Lifetime Fallout & Bethesda fan

I've said it it multiple threads that an intelligent death claw like gorris is the only companion I want.

Think of how cool his robes being thrown into the wind would look in this modern engine!

Meh personally I found the talking deathclaw kinda silly, almost like a dev let there teen kid into the studio one day and in his teen mind was like "oh man deathclaws so cool, but what if they could talk man, that be super cool!"

And advlt me over heres just like "eh you do know there is more then intelligence to the ability to speak right?"

No.

Talking animals were removed from Fallout 1 because they didn't fit, and then after Fallout 2, Avellone killed off the talking deathclaws for much of the same reason.

Animals should not talk, or be intelligent enough to, it is fundamentally counter to the very nature of Fallout.

I think one thing that Fallout has been missing is a little bit of horror. I think a Deathclaw follower would be OP in Fo4, especially seeing how beastly they are. That being said, I think that Deathclaws should be parrot certain phrases. Another thing I think they should do is this: Higher level Deathclaws should try to call to or attract you to them if you are sneaking or far away. Make little kissing sounds like we do to cats or call out to you, eerily.

What are you speaking of dear?

Also I loved Lily and the mutants there.. Much better than FO:3

Lily was by far my favorite Mutant companion.

Okay. Yeah. That would actually be terrifying. Not true intelligence, but more like a parrot repeating sounds it knows get it food and prey.

Exactly. Like it's hunting you and trying to attract you to it's location. The highest level and most intelligent might even be able to actually speak to you. Like when you kill it, it might say "My pack will hunt you down for this" or something to that effect.

yeahhhh, Super Mutants i can live with that but Deathclaw is stupid.

Plus Mastery army fit NV, dont fit Boston look a map. Rememeber most of the middle of US is control by Cesar, so any super mutant would have been kill.

Deathclaws' mouths aren't shaped right to form words. I like the super mutant idea though, and I wouldn't even mind a somewhat intelligent Deathclaw follower, but intelligent like a Dolphin, not intelligent like a human.

I think that 'ridiculous' is all in the implementation. After all, there's so much in the Fallout universe that is fundamentally ridiculous, but we accept it because it's done well. I mean, artificial intelligences based on thermionic valves? Really? And deathlaws themselves are supposed to be giant, ferocious https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9d/Chamaeleo_jacksonii.jpg https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/Tongue_extension_in_the_Three-horned_Chameleon.jpg, right? Which they don't resemble in any way at all, either size, appearance, build or behaviour. Or how about Harold? I mean, how ridiculous was he?

No, talking deathclaws could work, if it was done right. Personally, I think it might be more acceptable, given the tone of the game, if there was one, unique talking deathclaw which the Institute had grafted AI into, as an advance on the control systems of the Enclave deathclaws (well who do you think sold that technology to the Enclave?) In line with the general theme of sentient androids, there could be a quest to track down the escaped deathclaw and the control box it had stolen - which you could then either use to return the deathclaw to the institute, make the deathclaw your slave, or destroy to earn its gratitude.

[edit]

Of course, its voice would be synthesised. Perhaps it could sound like Codsworth... or, if female, like a refined, Edwardian English lady.

Maybe a talking Deathclaw as an encounter in a forlorn cave somewhere, but I wouldn't want one hanging around permanently.

Exactly. Just something to HEAR while you are exploring that sends chills up your spine and makes you frantically look around.

I liked K-9 in Fallout 2. A robotic enhanced dog with a human speech vocabulator and an incredible amount of sass.

Chosen One: "What kind of weapons can you use?"

K-9: "I got these sharp things, in my mouth. They're called teeth?"

It is possible for there to be intelligent Deathclaws, but talking Deathclaws requires experimentation. Intelligent Deathclaws would have their own unique language that better fits their vocal cords. So an intelligent Deathclaw speaking english means that some human organization forced the Deathclaw to speak english either through implants, surgery, or some other method just like how the Enclave experimented on Deathclaws in Fallout 2. If it happened once with the Enclave, then it can happen again with the Institute since controllable Deathclaws is a very attractive concept to a military.

Of course, there is the possibility that Gorris and Xarn from Fallout 2 survived and had children with regular Deathclaws which resulted in smarter Deathclaws. There is also the Hairy Deathclaws from Fallout Tactics which have not been killed off by the Enclave or experimented on. So they are likely a natural intelligent mutant that learned to speak english as a second language.

I wouldn't mind a talking deathclaw, as others have said, it's all in the implementation. And as others have said, a lot of the things in the game already are silly or defy logic, yet they're cool so it works.

Look at the Mirlurk King. What was going on there? The rest all are all crab, it's humanoid. Am I to believe some wastelander got drunk one night and woke up with a mirlurk?

The shape of their mouth has little impact on their capacity for speech, that assumption is incorrect. There are more ways to form words than using vocal chords and our mouths the way humans do. Talking deathclaws would speak in much the same way that parrots or myna birds do by changing the shape and depth of their trachea then running air through it. I work with birds professionally and they can not only mimic words and phrases but also use them in context to communicate theirs needs and desires. Deathclaws have a number of avian/saurian features so it's actually not very far fetched at all.

Ooh, or a young Deathclaw you come across by it's dead mother. Very young, in fact. It just kind of waddles up to you and paws at you with those big eyes and chirps.

I'd totally lift him up to the sun like Simba.

So we can swap out dog robobrains and have a gun with a dogs brain....we can spend some time searching for our own brain but sentient mutants/deathclaws are "too much" ?...seems like a bit of a disconnect to me.

But very few animals can change the shape and depth of their trachea to the level that those birds can. Even with humans, there are some sounds that some culture can easily speak, but requires training for another culture to speak. So if a talking Deathclaw was speaking english, then it would be heavily distorted.
