On another board for a game I helped kickstart, there is a good discussion about the release of the game. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter. I'd link the conversation, but it is in the "backer's only" section of the forums.
The Scenario:
Worlds of Magic is the name of the game. It is a self-titled "spiritual successor" to my favorite game, Master of Magic. These are 4X games *eXplore, eXpand, eXterminate, and eXploit."
They had 2 kiskckstarter campaigns, both highly touted for the "DRM Free" versions of the game. What Wastelands Interactive (the company creating the game) did was release a beta through Steam. They have been updating and patching this version only. It has "released" through Steam and even has some DLC available.
Many backers are quite upset as no word of when it will appear on GOG.com, the DRM FREE version. Also, for my own backing, I am supposed to receive a physical disc.
So, Wasteland Interactive has released the game. Through Steam. But their backers that supported DRM Free have had no game to play. Some are talking lawsuits.
Now, backers could go through Steam to get their games. But that is not what they paid for. It is a DRM Heavy game that many did NOT want.
What do you think? Is the game satisfying their contract with many of their backers? Do they owe these backers something other than DRM Heavy versions? Is it all just making a mountain out of a molehill?
