PC Interface is a disaster..

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 4:56 am

I swear somewhere below that horrible UI, there is a great game.

I wish i had the tools to grasp it.

Issue - Lack of confirmation dialoges / Lack of information (at the right time)

I first noticed this when the Vault Tec Rep talks to you and you get to decide your name and special stats.

At that moment you have no chance to switch to the help files or the perk chart and take a look what each

attribute actually gets you.

You're supposed to either know what you're doing or play it by heart. An informed decision for a newcomer

is impossible. But i could forgive that. After all it happens inside a dialoge.

But just 20min later when you come back to your house and pick up the special book you're asked to distribute

another special point. And this is where it gets bad ... The moment you pick up the bonus book, you can not

put it down again. You can not cancel out to check your current special distribution, and there is not even a

hint on the screen to your current distribution or what each attribute does. Basicly, after picking up that book,

i had to load an earlier safe and replay that part.

This trend goes on with bobbleheads and other stuff (though bobbleheads are forgivable).

It also took me 3 min of trial & error (pressing keys like crazy) to find out how to scroll down the perk chart.

I could go on and on about this issue alone but there is so much more..

Issue - Overuse of confirmation dialoges.

Just like there is a glaring absence of confirmation dialoges in one part of the game, in other parts they are

annoying the hell out of me.

Every single time you wanna scrap an object in a building area you get a confirmation dialoge. Why?

Why not just use an OSD to display the ingrediants gained from scrapping that object leave the dialoge out?

That's what quicksafes are for.

And then there is the implementattion of confirmation dialoges.

Everytime i try to scrap something, the default confirmation button is "Eingabe". I'm playing the english version

of the game on a german Win 7 system and the button prompt calls for the Enter key in german. It makes no

sense. More than making no sense, it is uncomfortable. There's a million objects i would like to scrap and

everytime i have to move my right hand from the mouse to the enter key? Why???

Oh but i don't. Actually the default use button can be used for confirmation aswell. Only the game doesn't tell

you that. So here i am pressing R and E add absurdum with my left index finger. If you enabled multiple

confirmation keys why not use two keys i can touch at the some time without moving? The word ergonomics

mean anything to you?

Try to dismantle a long fence on PC without going nuts.. it aint possible.

Issue - Clutter in inventory

We all love the pipboy, right? But there's only so much information you can put into such a limited, retro style

menu system before you overburden it. Among all the aditional information sub menus you put in there, you

also increased the load on the already existing ones.

The repair system is gone, so guns pile up in your inventory. Not to mention all the different types of the SAME gun.

The same goes for armor, and the layer system also adds a whole new category of inventory items that fill things up.

Then you made Junk items usefull, so those fill up too.

I really don't need a high OCD to be annoyed by this. Fast.

Just give us the ability to dismantle items into building materials right on the spot without traveling around.

Let us have our clean inventories .... please.

Issue - building selection menu

Seriously??

I don't even know what to say about this menu..... really???

This is the kind of menu early consoles and pre-x86 computer games had due to technical limitations of the time.

It has no place in a modern game...

A few more words.

I could go on and on and on about this but i just realized i already wrote a wall of text.

Suffice it to say i have the feeling this game was never properly QA tested on the PC side.

It feels like someone who prefers to play with gamepad just threw in keyboard support.

Made sure it technically works without giving a single thought about wether the UI is

ergonomical to use or makes overall sense.

Lots of it can be fixed in xml mods.

Enter as confirm button is clumsy. Use same button or one nearby.

Please somebody, anybody, if you're reading this and had the ability, unlock the "reserved" buttons and please find a way so that we can move while in build mode so we don't have to switch to the controller every time we want to lay down a wall.

Thank you.

HUD is broken on widescreen, its stuck at 4:3 ratio instead of scaling at all. If resolution is dropped to 4:3 the HUD fits fine but at 1920x1080 it floats away from the bottom looking real crappy.

seems pretty intuitive to me, I haven't had any down time to re learn how to use the inventory or any thing. it has been like picking up right where i left off. The interface for the settlement building is a bit odd, but I figured it out after just a minute or two.

The first issue, I don’t agree with.

Players whom are anol about building the most optimal character possible are refered to as Munchkin. This is a first play through man, just enjoy the game. If you screw up, you screw up. But the problems are easy to fix. You level quickly, and yours plus enemy damage stays all around the same.

The only bit I can really sympathize with in this point, is when it comes to which SPECIAL effects your survival. Which is Perception for Lockpick, Intelligence for Computer Science, Intelligence for Gun Nut and Science. I have no idea where Armorer is.

Second Issue, it’s not really much of a bother to me. It’s only an issue when it comes to how wonky the keyboard layout is. I don’t mind having that, because it prevents you from making a mistake where you loose out on some rare resource, or you screw up on your perk selection.

Third issue: I’m hit and miss.

I don’t like carrying a lot of crap with me now that I don’t have to repair anything. I’d like to just scrap what I have in my inventory on the spot. But at the same time, what would be the real gain to gameplay?

You add the ability to scrap things and send them to your workshop on the fly, then suddenly you loose the consequence of scavenging. You can only carry so much with you. If you grab everything that is not nailed down, you’ll need to drop something if you come across something more valuable vs the weight. Or it has a component you need.

The Pipboy feels a bit cluttered, but I honestly don’t mind. It’s very similar to how it was in the previous games, and it takes only a few minutes to get used to. What it drastically needed, and I am thankful for, is the ability to sort.

Fourth issue; This is really the only one I can agree with.

The selection menu… doesn’t even feel like it was meant for consoles. It’s quirky to work with. I mean, Garry’s Mod did a better job at it!

Here you have to hold down shift to even toggle through your menus. Then you need to press tab to stop doing what you’re doing. Or hold shift and go through your inventory. It’s just erking to work with on PC.

After returning the buttons to where they were previously, it is a lot less offensive than i feared. Though the Pip-Boy controls still svck. And i keep pressing Escape as the cancel/back button, which of course opens the main menu :swear:

Better than i feared, but not by much :meh:

Though positively, the UI has been the worst thing the game so far :hehe:

The abysmal UI was like a slap in the face. I feel like I'm constantly wrestling with it, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the crafting/building interface.

It's hilarious that the PC UI is constantly criticized in Bethesda's games, yet it never seems to get better. It makes me wonder if it was ever tested on the PC, because it is so blatantly bad it couldn't have gone unnoticed.

And I'm not naysaying the entire game - I absolutely love it so far.

Maybe its because bethesda has no beta community? they always just release their games instead of getting feedback from their biggest fans?

They propably anticipated the problem, because so far, E has also worked as a confirm button for me.

I just have to add this one ...

Why do i have to confirm everytime i am LEAVING a workbench?

Ask the user for confirmation when he intends to do an irreversable action, like using up ressources through modding

or building. That is ok. But why do i have to confirm that i wanna do NOTHING? Zip! Nada!

True but that (mods) cant be an excuse for Beth beeing so unable or unwilling to create a proper menu for PC.

But what else can you do? Bethesda is clearly unable or unwilling to do so

I finally learned that Tab is the cancel button instead of Escape. Except when lockpicking, when it is Escape :brokencomputer:

If it wasnt for my near endlessly configurable and programable keyboard + programable mouse, the PC interface short comings would have me stop extremely frustrated.

However, with everything customized, like one button scrap + confirm macros, it is reasonably good game, and may graduate to great once modders do what bethesda apparently didnt even try.

Here are my 2 least favorite things :

1. The "in world" dialogue is a cool feature, BUT, it means you cannot skip dialogue, which is super annoying. I play with subtitles on and just speed-read the dialogue which I can do in a fraction of the time it takes for the voice actors to say it, and I hate then having to wait.

2. In combat, it seems like I have to spend a lot of time switching between the AID and weapons pip boy tabs. Just really cumbersome - I have to find some cheap food or drink to eat to regenerate my health, since this saves stimpacks, and then browse around my weapons. I guess I could hotkey weapons but I can't really hotkey sugar bombs or whatever other food I got. The rads from it are still worth it because radaway is so common.

Couple random thoughts:

Enter as Confirm.... actually, you can also just hit E again. (discovered by accident) Also, you can click on selections as well (less convenient that hitting an easily reachable key, more convenient than moving your hand all the way over to Enter.)

Perk screen.... you can also scroll down the Perk chart by moving the mouse pointer to the bottom edge.

All in all, I haven't been having nearly the problems with the interface that some have been. Is it a great UI? Nah. But so far I've only had some minor annoyances.

The PC interface isn't good, the reserved keys are affecting how i play, and it has dampened my enjoyment of the game a bit.
