International Fallout

Post » Sat Jun 19, 2010 1:18 am

It might be as stupid as suggesting GTA going anywhere but America (Even though one was set in London) but do you think we'll ever see a Fallout game that's not set in America: Well, there may be that I don't know of because I don't know where Fallout Tactics etc. take place but I'm assuming America.

But would you like to see a Fallout set somewhere else? Like say, Europe, UK?...Australia? Or would that be TOO similar to Mad Max? :P

Fallout: Newcastle Upon-Tyne would be the best game ever.

I think Europe would be interesting, partly because I'm from Europe and partly because the whole situation would be SO much different.

There would be a LOT more hate and anger, directed against both China AND America, seeing as they didn't fire any nuclear missiles but still did get destroyed by them. The countries that lie the most near Russia would probably be -completely- annihilated while the countries on the shore, Belgium, Netherlands, France, and so on would be relatively unharmed. Except if the UK was hit by a nuke too (to which the presence of Alistair Tenpenny in F3 hints).

The convergence of different cultures would make the people and newly formed communities/cities more interesting as well, kind of like we've got ghouls and humans in the US, you could have Germans and Frenchies hating each other in Europe.

Who says they didn't fire any nuclear missiles? It's pretty much certain they did.

Didn't J.E. Sawyer state that he wanted to do a European Union Fallout setting at one point?

First, it's European Commonwealth, not Union. Second, yes, but it was going to take place before the Great War:

I dunno, I personally feel Americana is an important element of the Fallout franchise. All-American 1950s family values and Cold War culture are vital parts of the games' propaganda and aesthetic.

I suppose Russia could work, because Russia is a country that seems like an appropriate setting for post-apocalypia. It's a vast landscape that lends itself well to bleak settings, and even today there are abandoned bunkers, silos, bases, and other remnants of the old Soviet military-industrial complex littering the landscape. Not to mention the fact that Russia was a major player in the Cold War.

Besides that, though, China is simply too alien to the setting, and smaller European countries just don't have any emotional resonance for most of the target audience.

In short No.

Although a spin-off could take place in Europe, but the main series should stay in America

I could see a Fallout game taking place outside of America - when you get down to it, there's potential for pretty much anywhere in the world, really. But like has been said - that's best done as a spin-off series. I could see it happening, though. If New Vegas does well, then that proves that it least has potential to be spun-off into other games. I do think the main series should stick to America, though. A lot of Fallout's "charm" relies on it's unique vision and art direction. The particular aesthetics of what Russia's pulp sci-fi view of the future was is going to be slightly different than what ours was, to a certain degree, for example.

Fallout: Ireland

Everyone was too drunk to even notice there was a nuclear war.

No. Probably the majority of the surivors you meet in any given fallout game cannot trace their ancestry to a vault.

I agree with the statement that a spinoff is acceptable..

But a full on game would just be missing that optimism we saw in american culture during the 50s, to me the USSR was.. eh.. eviler? Though that could still be american propaganda working its magic..

Though I'd want it to be in a EU state, not russia..

If you want russia there's always STALKER.. if you really want a russian-like game (yeah Chernobyl is in Ukraine, close enough :) )

To be perfectly honest, I'd rather not see the series leave America... it's just not necessary. Most of the world looks like America, so there's not really much of a point in leaving it. Not to mention that they'd end up making English the primary language in non-English speaking countries; if you're going to do that, then why bother?

There's no difference here with how games set in the US are dubbed in other countries.

Eh I'd like it to stay in the US, finish off the tales started. That and the idea of all these inevitable spinoffs, heh.

The only nations that MIGHT provide for an interesting foray would be:

The Dominion of Canada(Very similar to the US, and common language)
The Soviet Union(Major player period).
The United Kingdom(Due to it's international recognition and common language)

What? There is no such country. :) You mean the newly annexed northern part of the US? :)
