Interneptitude

It should be customary for the young and experienced to give their elders and inexperienced relatives "the talk" regarding matters on-line.

Lol I tried sitting down and trying to teach my dad and mum about computers. All I hear is...

"Let ME hold the mouse! Let me learn!"

"Your going too fast, slow down for Pete's sake!"

"What was that?? What did you press I didn't see it!"

and my favorite when there are no icons on the desktop...

"MIKE! Where's all the programs, someone deleted everything!!"

I quit trying to teach them. -_-

Gotta agree with Moon here. There exist plenty of people who are surprisingly ignorant and intimidated by the internet. It seems simple to us because the territory is old. Hell, even I use Google to go to websites I frequent out of sheer habit. I mean damn, there's stupidity and then there's ignorance. I'm starting to wonder just how many people I know are actually full of themselves.

In the context we're using it, stupid means ignorant.

The only thing I see here is an excuse for everyone to poke fun at other people. I'm personally getting just a wee bit tired of all the topics in CD cropping up that consist of nothing but speaking ill of people we don't know. Yeah, it's a little humorous, but it's coming off as elitist to me.

i'm mixed about this... I can certainly see why people could end up on the wrong site, although I'm a tad worried that people don't have the common sense to read the article and see the ReadWriteWeb logo and conclude that it isn't actually Facebook...

Although this comment is win: "This is a little confusing until I get used to it."

Well, I did have to laugh. Not so much because someone just googled for the login page of facebook - there are still plenty of people who are simply not that comfortable with computers and surfing the web. What baffles me is more the fact that they were apparently persistently clicking around on the article in an effort to get the login page up - so they simply didn't bother to read the page they were on? Instead they leap right to posting irate comments - calling it stupid, wrong, bs..- hey, they sure got one part of the internetz right! The idea to blow up and post angry comments on just about anything under the sun.

Elitist or not, some people are just plain stupid. If thinking that makes me a dike then I guess I am, some people are simply to stupid for me to respect.

The following is an excerpt from http://notalwaysright.com/ and it's one of the less stupid ones.

Me: "Hello, how may I help today?"

Caller: "Yeah, your [software] isn't working. It's a virus."

Me: "Okay, sir. What do you mean, it's a virus?"

Caller: "Every time I put the disc in, I get a message from the computer."

Me: "What kind of message?"

Caller: "I don't read it. It's a warning message so I click 'no'."

Me: "Okay, can you insert the disc and tell me the message?"

Caller: "Sure."

Me: "What does it say sir?"

Caller: "Would you like to install?" *reads name of software* "? on your?" *click*

Well in the information society we live in you'd think they would at least have some basic computer literacy. Common sense too, despite its absence in recent days.

EDIT: Unless we're dealing with 12 o'clock flashers. Then it's impossible.

Yeah, I'm often over at Gamefaqs as well. I'm never there long, though, considering it's not heavily modded like here. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood or something today (which is funny, because my day's pretty awesome so far). I've been on the internet for a large portion of my life and I admit that I have my moments of ignorance and I do sometimes fly off the handle, but for some reason I'm starting to get irritated by the way people treat each other, especially when they're behind the cover of anonymity.

Edit: I must be getting soft. Maybe I've been playing way too much Persona 4, I dunno. Let's see if I become a hard ass after playing some manly Nocturne.

I'm not sure if I want to laugh or cry more. People are stunningly stupid. I don't think this is an example of elitism on our part - this is like finding a lawnmower on your drive, trying to drive it like a car, then screaming and crying and throwing rocks at the lawnmower.

Case in point:

Me: "Welcome to [wireless carrier], how may we help you today?"

Caller: "I want to book a room at the hotel."

Me: "I'm sorry, sir. You've called [wireless carrier], so we can't help you with that."

Caller: "What? Why not? I called the number on the promo letter I received!"

Me: "You've called a cell phone company, not a hotel."

Caller: "Why wont you help me? I just want to book the room, and it says call this number!"

Me: "Sir, we are not a hotel, we have cell phones. I'm sure the hotel can assist you with booking a room if you call the correct number."

Caller: "Why can't you help me? Is it because you are completely booked?"

Me: "Yes, that's why."

Caller: "Ok, I'll call somebody else then." *click*

My friend is a total techno-moron. He got phished, and he kept getting logged out of msn by a bot telling people to go to a site to check out msn photos (which is how he got phished in the first place). He kept going on msn going "I HAVE A VIRUS, I HAVE A VIRUS". I facepalmed.

Aye, human stupidity knows no bounds. And so does something as directly proportionate such as laughing.

This cements my belief that many Facebook users are really just computer illiterates that gravitate between Facebook, Youtube and Wikipedia. "O Noez, google is broked!"

What worries me is thfe people who, over 40, read it, and still didn't understand it. We need to cull the fools now. This is nothing to do with internet literacy, this is basic reading comprehension.

This is why we need people with at least an IQ over 100 to be able to purchase a computer.
