About a month ago my computer was infected with the AV Security Suite malware. I was able to remove it but I think it may have turned some things off which weren’t fixed when it was removed.

One of the things AVSS does is disable your internet. Apparently it changed my settings in Firefox (and elsewhere) but I was able to change them back very easily. For a while a number of other applications wouldn’t connect to the internet but I eventually found out where it had changed my general settings in my Internet Properties. After this everything seemed fine.

Today I installed Steam but when I try and run it I’m told it can’t connect to the servers and to try again later. I’ve tried a few times across the day and nothing has changed so I wonder if I still have a problem on my side. I know I should probably just to a clean re-install of Windows but it will be a while before I’m in a position to do that.

I do know this isn’t a firewall issue, I did give Steam and exception and I’ve also tried with my Firewall off and it still wouldn’t work.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I've been finding Steam unstable myself, lately, and I wasn't able to connect for a while either. When it tried to update yesterday it told me it was down. I say wait a bit more and see if it works.

Hell, my old computer (and by far the better one) won't connect at all (network or internet). Have no clue why. I use Spybot SD and System Mechanic Professional on it and neither report anything. Even did a clean re-install of windows... probably my adapter (but no problems reported on it either). Grr.

Anyways, I feel your pain HD. I feel it.

Delete clientregistry.blob (or rename it to .blob.old) and steam.dll (or rename it to .dll.old), and then run steam again.

Huh, I don't have a steam.dll file.

I'll try re-installing.

Well it's nice to know SpyBot and AVG had done their job after all. I was in the process of switching from Norton's (which expired) to AVG when I got that stupid virus.
