Interplay Discovery - the lowdown on the program

Post » Thu Jun 25, 2009 7:24 pm

Hello:

I am running a video game company which gears towards PC gaming. If we ever finish our product, what does gamesas Discovery have to offer that would make the competition look less appealing? What percentage of sales do you take a cut of when the game sells? Do you offer retail boxing in addition to online distribution via Steam or an equivalent service? In addition to a well written design document, what else is required?

Hello,

You might have better luck using the contact form. The developers usually visit the forums but they're in a different office than the business people who deal with the Discovery requests.

I think it would be best to ask when your project is close to completion though since if you get a response you can use that momentum to pitch your concept and perhaps create a better approach proposal in the process.

We only needed a design document once we were approached. I assume you would also need a working demo if things went beyond that since the program is only open to complete or nearly complete titles.

Good luck!

I'm also curious if those Discovery games are boxed retail, and in case if they're going to be sold here in Germany?

From the looks of things, it seems like it's digital only for now. I think a good strategy would be to see how the titles do digitally first and then decide if a retail release is necessary. Two of last years biggest Indie games (Trine and Torchlight) did this to much success. gamesas has also been pushing a lot of downloadable stuff since restarting development, notable exceptions are the Fallout Collection but games like that are guaranteed to sell through at retail.

In Germany, are you able to download any of gamesas's iPhone or PC titles from Steam? I'd assume it would be the same here unless they are going to opt for a different distribution method altogether.

Technically Steam and the Appstore would be options. Personally I don't support these kind of things, since I prefer being in full control of my purchases and I collect physical copies of video games.

I occasionally do WiiWare for some stuff I can't resist, but usually regret it. FFCC:Darklord was about the only one so far I considered worth its money. Too bad it's not available on disc.

For the iPhone/iPad stuff the App Store would be the only way. I support retail as much as I can, Stardock (the company behind Impulse) as a similar service to Steam but with some of the titles on their service you can pay a little bit extra and get sent a physical copy of the game along with the digital version.
