[WIPz] Into Oblivion

Post » Sat Dec 04, 2010 5:37 am

Hey there,

Well since my "return" to modding, I have spent my time working on Riller-Mosh but these last few days I have been working on a Daedric Realm mod.

Into Oblivion is designed to be a short quest mod which allows the player to enter Oblivion realms similar to those found during the Oblivion main quest.

So far I have done one realm ( though it needs some detailing ) which includes the following interiors:

- 1 Oblivion plain
- 1 Daedric Ruin
- 1 small cave
- 2 Daedric Towers

The Story

The quest will be centered around reports that threre is an increase in daedric activity at the shrine near Fort Moonmoth (near balmora) and the imperial legion thinks that a cult of Daedra worshipers/summoners is reasponsible - so they sent a small team of guards to deal with the problem. However they havnt returned. The quest giver ( an imperial captain ) sends you to investigate what has happened to them, whereby the player discovers an Oblivion gate.

The player - after reporting to the captain - is told to go to mages guild in Balmora to obtain information about the gates. The player is then told how to close the oblivion gate and that a memeber of the guild was researching Oblivion gates and may have had a hand in opening the one near moonmoth. This sets of a "mini" quest where the body of the mage who opened the gate is found dead in the oblivion realm. His journal will shed some light as to what he was attempting and who help'd him. ( Enter the mythic dawn here )

This mod aims to be a bit of a dungeon crawl, a bit of fun and not too serious on the quest area but with enough backstory to help solidfy it. The rewards wont be many but I hope they will be sufficant enough for the player to want to paly the mod. The rewards are a few magic items and Sigil stone. The sigil stone can be inserted into an Esquisite ring ( via a mage in the Balmora mages guild) to provide a nice resistance to fire and an increase in Destruction.

Once the mod is finished it will also leave room for expansion - and i am hopping to maybe do a sequal.

As it stands at the moment, so far i have finished the layout of the oblivion plane and i am adding detail to it. Then i have the interiors for the cave, towers and ruin to do.

Progress has been good and i thought i would share it here with you all which will help me not to forget about the mod and leave it on the back burner!

Screenshots

Ok i have rambled enough, time for some screenshots, please note that they are all taken from the CS:

First of all I would like to say this. Welcome back. :foodndrink:

I like the idea a lot and the pics was great. Good stuff.

It's possible to go the other side of the wall / barrier ?
May I suggest that the starting quest you mentioned, why not have the spymaster as quest giver instead ? That could take place as soon that playrer have come back from Tel Fyr (corprus cure) quest and his return to Cyrodiil is delayed after the player has finish the first daedric realm quest.

I'm looking forward to see your progress. :)

Why would you stick with the Captain ?

After all this daedric activity this a real threat to empire in the same way as the 6th house priest Gares ?

Looks pretty cool midget, but i personally would remove the boundary wall. Nothing like that in OB, and im sure if you just scatter around lots of borken, leaning tall pillars it would look much better :)

Keep it up

I see what your saying but i am going to stick with the captain for two reasons:

1) I dont want to touch any main quest essential characters

2) The imperial just think its a bunch of daedra worshipers at first. They could have gone to the temple and put in a request for ordinators. But they Imperial guard are obliged to follow up any "monster" reports in the area and so see it that they have to hunt any daedra in the area to make it safe - thats what they are there for. They dont expect an oblivion gate :D

I appricate your input so please dont let this stop you posting more input! I am, just for now, sticking with a guard captain.

@SGMonkey - the idea for the wall was to prevent players from walking and falling down. The interior is set up to act as an exterior which means it has a water hieght. The wall also hides this :D - It also, for users of MGE will hide the fact that theres nothing byond the "realm"

First: it is something that I want, to visit Oblivion in Morrowind.

Second: don't do it like a quest for low level characters. I think only once the PC is experienced, he can have the chance to visit Oblivion.

Third: do not use the classical way, to introduce a PC to a quest. A Npc asks for your help... PLEASE
It could be introduced differently. The rumors about the dead soldiers, are enough. THen the player may decide by himself, if he wants to venture into the daedric ruin, and investigate these events.
The general feelings I have in Morrowind, is that everyone has a favor to ask me. (and it is not only a feeling, because they really do like this).

Fourth: I wouldn't use a http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w152/Wolfsbane_89/TESConstructionSet2010-04-2219-17-3.jpg around the area. It looks too much like a cell of the game. Use something else instead. Use some Mountains around the area, and disable levitation.

Same here, hope this lives up to it!

Well i was going to make it that when the player is rank 3 in the Imperial legion they get given this quest.

As said its going to be given to the player when they are 3rd rank in the imperial legion. I could have it that the imperial captain just mentions the increased activity and he sent some troops to investigate. Kinda have it as an open begining. Its up to the player to investigate instead of they are told to investigate....

hmmm, SGMonkey said a similar thing. Problem is there are no "mountain" resources that i could use. I could use rocks but then it looks to static, and the rocks are not big enough (even when scaled to max) as i am using only 2 rock types. wouldnt make sense to use the large West Gash region rocks in oblivion.

If anyone knows of any resources that i could use as the barrier that would be great! What i really want is a "sky box" type thing i could put over the area that reaches down to the lava. That would solve all my problems.

from my personal point of view, in Morrowind a travel to Oblivion, :obliviongate: should happen at the end of a carrier, after the PC met Dagoth Ur.
I wouldn't be impressed anymore from the Akulakhan Chamber, if I already visited Oblivion.

to increase the size and retexture a few rocks or even to model a few mountains, wouldn't be a difficult task.

Do you want this to be lore friendly? It sounds like it, but I'm not sure.

There are certain issues with lore regarding adding a stable gate to Oblivion, as the Amulet of Kings and dragonfires are still functional.
There have been portals to Oblivion before though, but the daedra are unable to cross the boundary into Tamriel. Daedra can't use them, but those from Nirn can.
So I wouldn't make the Daedric ruin containing the gate flooded with daedra from Oblivion, because they can't use the gate, instead have it guarded by worshippers of Mehrune's Dagon.

If you aren't too bothered about lore, then that's ok, just giving you a quick heads-up just in case.

Shannon made some sky boxes btw. Can't link you to them atm, but maybe someone else can.
Btw, it's looking good, I hope to journey to the Deadlands soon. :)

I think the water is not necessary here. Uncheck the "has water" box.

A savior for the player perhaps. I'm just kidding. I like your intentions Midgetalien.

Perhaps the player could discover it just by him self.

You could use the interior of the daedra prince Hircine's realm.

Yes Lore Friendly :D - The story behind the opening up of the gate is in the mini quest. The Mage responsible has a journal on him. essentially he wanted to get his hands on a sigil stone but was having difficulty opening an oblivion gate. He makes some enquiries and through his research he was contacted by a memeber of the mythic dawn. The Mythic dawn set about helping him "establish a gate" but they refuse to let him have the sigil stone (as it will close the gate) but he ignores this and enters the gate.....

Spoiler

In the Ruin where the oblivion gate is there is the remains of a "camp" in which the palyer can find a book on various things in oblivion namly what to expect, sigil stones and ingrediants etc... but also a note to a mythic dawn memeber which acknowledges the members efforts in establishing a stable gate in morrowind and also hinting that other members in other proviences were not having the same ammount of luck....and its only a matter of time before the dragonfires fail.----- this is where i have ideas for a part II ;)

Just done a quick search - I found the skyboxes on PES - Looks promising, will check them out and post a screenie :)

@ Arcimaestro Anteres - I cant help the water being there. By checking the box to behave as exterior the tick box for has water is greyed out and a water hieght of 0 placed in the cell.

Sounds good so far! :D

Btw, you could have a few daedra in the ruin, like the daedric creatures in the other ruins in Vvardenfell. I'd just steer clear of anything large scale.
Though I think having just Mythic Dawn members with some actual summoning spells would show their trouble in aquiring Daedric minions using the gate better.

Yeah i was thinking of this.

I was planning on having some mythic dawn memebers. ( If anyone wants to do a simple Robe and Hood retexture that would be great ;) - Hint hint )

The residants as it is stand at - 2 dead legionaires. 1 dead mage. I was thinking a few scamps and calnfear and then a daedra in the tower guarding the sigil stone. Along with some Mythic Dawn members around.

As far as mountain statics are concerned, you could make the mountains with the editor, and then use cell to nif to make them into statics, also im sure in the existing oblivion realms there is landscape everywhere, so you could make terrain meshes for the whole interior and then tile lava meshes everywhere with those black boxes too. And you could then make a mesh like the editormarker but much much bigger to create an invisible wall. As for a skybox, DONT DO IT! :P

Set it to an exterior and use the red mountain region or something like that. The sky would be dark and redish enough to look like oblivion :)

Dude, take a look at my WIP thread if you need mountains, I've been at it for the longest time to try to make good looking mountains of pretty huge size. Anything in there can be used as a resource, atm tho there is not all that many meshes in the alpha but I might upload a new alpha if it's urgent that you get the meshes.

Looking forward to this oh and if you are using this to learn about quest making, I suggest you have some nice gameplay to make up for it. I'm sure you will tho, I have complete faith in your sensibilities =)

Cheers mate!
