Intresting Idea on Magic.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:00 pm

I'm not going to vote, but:

I want there to be a chance of failing the spell if I'm taking hit at the time of casting, if it happens at the same time, but still only a small chance. That was in oblivion too, but it didn't consume magicka if I remember correctly.

Morrowind had no regenerative magicka.
Morrowind had basic fumbles as spell failures.
I think one of them should be brought back. Personally I believe regenerative magicka is the most significant problem where you just keep trading in magicka to health at no cost at all. Restorative absorb could be an entry spell, and absorb spell could be further down the line. Combine with plenty of sources for magicka it only makes life mildly naturally inconvenient like it is for all other styles of play.

No. I think the spell effectivness was a good enough alternative.

Absolutely not, failing spells is SO not heroic!

the fatigue idea is actually very intresting. I think it could also add something for melee and ranged weapons, similar to Oblivion where you do less dmg if you are tired.

Yes, please make it impossible to walk around for an hour with a fully drawn bow and no drain on fatigue .

Failing spells is better than not being able to cast them at all. Do you want another system like oblivion where you just out of nowhere can cast an impossible spell?

Ok so I was sitting in the subway and thought of an intresting take on magic casting.

I was thinking of what if when you tried to cast a spell that there would be a chance of it failing. I am also thinking the chance should be greater if you are lets say novice, compared to apprentice, and no chance if you are a master. It would also be kinda cool if lets say you tried to cast something and instead of it completely failing to could turn into a different spell and affect the user or the mob, or both.

example 1: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails and turns into a random spell which in turn hurts you.

example 2: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails to become a fireball spell and instead turns into an enchantment spell and turns the troll into a chicken.

example 3: Same as the above but turns YOU into a chicken.

example 4: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails and instead you summon something from another relm and attacks you too, and then it kills the troll. or it become a paralize spell.

example 5: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails completely and does not cast leaving you confused as to what happend.

I think you get the Idea what do you think?

I had the exact same idea but instead I was going to use it for D&D.

More magick skill=less chance of failing
100 magick skill=no fail chance
So maybe.

That should only happen if your magic skill is extremely low. In all the stories I've ever read about wizards and stuff they don't get the spell wrong. Maybe they try to cast one when they're gassed and it doesn't work at the intensity it should (example would be if you have 40 magika left and a spell costs 80 and normally does 100 damage, you could still use it but it would only do 40-60 damage instead of the usual 100). I can't think of any times in the books that a wizard tried to cast a fireball and ended up with, say, a soul trap or something. That would just be frustrating too.

Before we could decide if spell failure should be included we have to know how spellcasting works, and what reasons there would be for a spell to fail.

Did the spell fail because you didn't do the right incantation or make the right symbol? did it fail because you were distracted? Did it fail because you weren't sincere enough in wanting it to succeed? These things all depend on how spell casting works.

NO. thats certainly an annoying RNG function that IMO has no place in new games. I'm glad it most likely won't be in.

example 6: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails and instead summons Alduin. GAME OVER.

Meh it wouldn't ruin the game if it was in but I don't think I would support it or like to see it in. Especially for those of us who want to make a all magic character.

If you wanted a full magic character, it's reasonable to assume that you'd have picked a mer / Breton anyway, and used the schools of magic as primary skills anyway. That means you'd start with proportionally speaking, very high magic skills. That'd mean that your chance of miscasting would be very low, compared to an everyman who didn't pick them as a skill, but is trying to be good at everything.

I think the system of misses and fails has been abandoned in favour of a more dynamic combat system. The closest thing to fails you'll have is actually missing your opponent or having him dodge/shield, and I'm fine with that, while the drawback of strong spells is that it drains your magicka pool a lot more.
I'm all for having fatigue/magicka having an effect on combat though, periodically blurring your vision or making the image shift a bit, or maybe making your spell 'orbs' diverge from their intended path?

No, no, no, no, no. Not very proficient, then only cast weak spells. Are we gonna have rolls to hit in combat, rolls to block, rolls to see if you fall over after a long jump. It'll end up like Rolemaster ( rolls to see if he's cut himself shaving and all that. )

Yes, depending on skill level and the spells level, there should be a possibility to fail - and with high enough gap between them, some spells should be unlearnable.

It would, also, make sense for melee combat. Based on the level your characters skill and the opponents skill. And it needn't be implemented visually like in Morrowind (which seems to be the biggest gripe of this particular issue), but with appropriate dodge/block/coutnerattack animations and the under-the-hood mechanics from Morrowind it would, I think, feel much better. Would make the character/skill progression much more satisfying as the results would be more visible to the player, imo.

^^ If I were you I'd start taking a different route.^^ :D

Seriously though, the occasional spell fail could work. I wouldn't want to see alternate spells accidentally cast in place of what you intended to cast, but a spell fail now and then, with an animation of the spell beginning to form and then sputtering out before it was effectively cast would be a nice touch.
