Intresting Idea on Magic.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:53 pm

Ok so I was sitting in the subway and thought of an intresting take on magic casting.

I was thinking of what if when you tried to cast a spell that there would be a chance of it failing. I am also thinking the chance should be greater if you are lets say novice, compared to apprentice, and no chance if you are a master. It would also be kinda cool if lets say you tried to cast something and instead of it completely failing to could turn into a different spell and affect the user or the mob, or both.

example 1: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails and turns into a random spell which in turn hurts you.

example 2: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails to become a fireball spell and instead turns into an enchantment spell and turns the troll into a chicken.

example 3: Same as the above but turns YOU into a chicken.

example 4: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails and instead you summon something from another relm and attacks you too, and then it kills the troll. or it become a paralize spell.

example 5: You are walking to your destination and you see a troll. before you can do anything about it the troll spots you and start running towards you at full speed. in your excitement you start casting a fireball spell which fails completely and does not cast leaving you confused as to what happend.

I think you get the Idea what do you think?

I agree there should be a chance, albeit a small chance, that spells will fail with lower skill levels. By the way, this was done in Morrowind, but I think the failure rate was way too high. As a way to balance this, I think higher level spells should do more damage than they did in Oblivion, while having a slightly higher failure rate (nearly zero when your skill is at Master level).

Maybe a curtain % of “magic fail” would be alright but only checked against the skill level of casters of a particular school.

Meh it wouldn't ruin the game if it was in but I don't think I would support it or like to see it in. Especially for those of us who want to make a all magic character. I know it makes sense to have some spells fail when you attempt them at lower levels but wouldn't it also make sense for sword swings to miss then with lower levels in that skill. I just think in combat you want your attacks you attempt to hit otherwise you feel weak. Just my opinion though. One in a million.

Base it on fatigue. With full fatigue every spell is guarenteed. If you try to play the game like Quake and run out of fatigue then your spells begin failing.

That hits about three birds with one stone.

I think there should be at least a small chance. I personally like to use both and never be fully a mage so i kinda makes sence. but I DO mean that the % should only matter in the schools of magic art that you are in. if you summon alot you should be able to summon without much failure. As a master of the art maybe only the REALLY high cast spell would have a tiny chance of failing, otherwise everything should be a 100% cast.

pretty much what shroomin said: it would be a good idea IF it doesn't happen too often. basically, if you look at morrowind, it was way too much! hell with morrowind every damn failure related to combat was a lot too common

Absolutely! Morrowind had this and it makes sense that you fail at something at which you're not proficient.

Will there be a LUCK attribute in Skyrim?

Another thread on this forum suggested there wouldn't be any attributes, but I don't recall any confirmation of that in the GI article.

Failure? In an RPG? You can't be serious. Sounds like luck. Don't think dice roll well with RPG's...
[/sarcasm]

As much as I am a fan of dice rolls (for everything), including sprees of flukes and fumbles, the game have derailed from that already. "No, that didn't work, so let's just reload and try again" is the problematic exploit here compared to dice games. Appears we get things as illusion skill, with a bunch of perks associated with that skill. It's natural for me to think of these perks as access to certain spell effects (depending on how "advanced" they are), where success it always granted and effect is governed by the skill value (since we have no attributes anymore).

So, yeah, I support it. But I don't expect it.

Yes please. I hope fights will be challenging instead of spam fests of the same spell.

What does a random chance have to do with challenge?

I voted no. These kinds of things usually annoy me greatly, especially when it's as frequent as it is in Morrowind.

Mmmm it sorta feels like alot of the 'no' answers are because it was pretty common in morrowind (I have never played), so thats why I agree that it should be a pretty low chance, but I think there still should be a somewhat of a chance for the immersion aspect. It also does not have to fail completely, what if it fails and the spell is just not as strong as it is normally. Actually if it fails and gives a completely different effect then what you want (like turning something into a chicken) it could be quite amusing. Thoughts?

% chance to fail was irritating in morrowind and would be in skyrim as well imo. +It's easy to abuse/cheese when it comes to spells you don't need to use during combat.

Personally I don't want spell failure back, what I do want is power ranges on spells again. e.g. 5-15 dmg instead of 10 dmg.

Well, I vote for a chicken spell as a gag, that would be hilarious. Or a shrink spell. Pet troll in your house maybe? Ultimate victory over a dragon, keep em in a fish bowl...

I kind of like this idea. Not a big fan of the failing spells though, hated how it worked in Morrowind anyway. But maybe the fatigue thing would be a good idea, would also encourage roleplaying for mage characters (yes, I think walking a bit and not running around everywhere is a part of roleplaying, and I like it :)). If the risk of failure is in, this is how I see it work.

the fatigue idea is actually very intresting. I think it could also add something for melee and ranged weapons, similar to Oblivion where you do less dmg if you are tired.

All spells should have a requirement (any skill level bethween 0 and 100, depending on the spell's power), and if your character don't meet the requirement there should be a chance of failure when casting.
