I introduced my daughter to Morrowind back in 2003. She was thirteen at the time and hadn't played many video games so I wasn't sure she'd like it. After installing Morrowind and Tribunal on her laptop I spent about fifteen minutes showing her how the controls worked and then I left her to do her own thing. To my surprise she played that game everyday for the next two months. Almost everyday she'd come into my study (where I was usually busy making a Morrowind mod) and ask a question about the game. I'd get up and go to her laptop and demonstrate something and then sit there and watch her play for awhile. I didn't interfere unless she asked for help. It was one of the best times we've ever had together. We had been very close when she was very young (I was a stay-at-home-Dad) but had grown apart a little bit as she grew up. This gave us a chance to re-connect that I will always be thankful for.
When she got to one of the Ashlander camps she decided she wanted a yurt of her own there. So I opened up the Construction Set on her laptop and showed her the basics of working the CS (this is actually harder than playing the game). I let her do the whole thing. She would tell me what things she wanted to use and I would show her how to find them. I let position everything where she wanted it, answering questions when asked. She discovered you could also change the properties of weapons and armor, so she made her own 'balance' mod as well. My daughter and I spent several days Morrowind making mods together. That was the high point of a two-month-long high point for me.
She moved on to other interests about the time Bloodmoon was released. But I will always remember those two months. I wish I could have them back.
