Inventory/Loot Management

Post » Wed Feb 09, 2011 8:37 am

One of my fond memories of Oblivion (and I have a lot) was OCD organizing my loot into the houses I had. I usually just used one house and then put everything in it. One chest would be for my duplicated arrows (ok...who HASN'T done this...) and then armor in a chest of drawers. However, sometimes it was a PITA to do all this with the amount of stuff you wanted to keep. Sometimes you wanted to be crafty and place the items physically in the environment for show & tell but that never worked out right since it was tedious.

I was wondering if Bethesda have mentioned anything regarding loot management and like houses and stuff? It would be sweet if they really streamlined SIMILAR to Assassin's Creed's villa where Ezio can see all his weapons and armor on the stand, but you could choose what you want to show in Skyrim. How awesome would that be?

What are your thoughts?

I also am a TES hoarder. In Morrowind, I actually laid out one of each type of weapon and armor in a house very carefully just for kicks.
I kind of doubt they are going to put any resources streamlining this though because I'm sure we're kind of unique in this respect. The average player probably only keeps a few extra weapons and armor sets at all.

Very few were a bigger hoarder than me. Any item with a name got stored. Every key got saved. And I had at least one full set of each outfit/armor. I had to spread the collection over every house and hideout. And my skingrad house had so much on display it was dangerous to enter. If anything lagged the house went crazy.

I hope they added at least some better controls to place things. It was a pain to fill up 30+ book shelf's in numerical order.

I think they should go ahead and add a mannequin/display system to the game natively, as that is always one of the first modded in features. Just limit it to player housing only, integrate them properly, and set limits to how they can be used.

Some of us buy the game for a console so a simple system would be best. Such as controlling items with the d-pad.

I too am a hoarder, in both Morrowind and Oblivion. Every named weapon/armor, every key, every book (I had quite a library!), tons of ingredients, clothing (for practicing enchanting and for enchanting useful items), and just odds and ends I thought were cool. :) BookRotate was a lifesaver, as were ingredient sorters! I hope they have things like that to help me out!

Um, that would be me. Didn't even hear about this bug until the recent threads about glitches & exploits in Skyrim.

As for being Super Packrat..... yeah, I love collecting Stuff?. I use a house mod for Oblivion, mostly for the storage space.... it's got huge arrays of organized and labeled chests for everything! :D

(ten armor chests, ten weapon, several for bows/arrows/staves, a dozen for different sizes of soulgem, several for alchemy ingredients & potions, a bunch for jewelry & clothes.... yay, stuff! Oh, and plenty of display cases.....)

Automatic display racks? Eh, I dunno. Maybe weapon racks that would display weapons in the open, but you interacted with like chests?

(Come to think of it, there was that armor stand in Knights of the Nine that would display the crusader gear as you returned it..... /ponder)

Yea. I'm sort of hopeful. They obviously tried with the display cases. But buggy physics and awkward placement kinda ruined those.

Loot management seems like an afterthought. It really should be easy. Armor mannequins, and mounting stuff on walls. Basically you click on a wall the same way you would a door, then it opens your inventory, and you place a weapon there, which you can move and rotate. Ta-daa.

The loot management has been good in both Morrowind and Oblivion. So i will Sure expect it to be good in skyrim.

I have suggested a system to fix the (well, terrible) item placement system, it is a bit slow but it works well.

Ok the first thing is to keep the basic system for moving the item around in the world the same (bear with me). Where when you aimed at an object and held a specific button (All controls done for 360 so LB) you could move the object through the game world.

This is where it gets different. In my system, the one thing you probably won't be doing while organizing your house/moving stuff is fighting. So the Right Trigger now allows you to switch between Move mode and Rotate mode. If you are in Move mode, the rotation of the object will NEVER change, no matter if you swing it in circles, smash it on a table, or do anything else. The only way to change the rotation of the object is to let it go (and let havok physics take over) or to switch to Rotate mode.

In Rotate Mode, you can still move around the game with the left anolog Stick, but the right anolog Stick will no longer spin you around. Instead, it rotates the object you are moving. This allows you to get the perfect rotation on a book or a piece of armor, and then when you pull the Right Trigger again, the rotation of the object will be frozen once more, so you can go back to placing it on the shelf or wherever. So as a tutorial:

You drop a sword on the floor, then use the LB to grab it. You intend to place it in a corner, with the hilt on the ground and the blade upright. The sword is currently on it's side. You pull RT and switch to Rotate mode. Using the Right anolog Stick, you rotate the item until the hilt points towards the floor and the blade will rest on the wall. You press RT again to go to Move mode. You then place the item in the corner and release LB.

Simple. But you may ask, what if I don't want it to fall over when I miscast a spell or hit it with another object? That is where the Suspend Physics option comes in. If you release LB while in Move mode the item reacts normally, falling over when bumped. But if you release LB in Rotate mode, the item's physics will be partially suspended until you pick the item up or move it again. It will not fall or move at all. This way (provided we get movable light sources again) You could actually hang torches and lanterns up on walls or on the ceiling. You could put shields and swords on walls too. With some time and precision you could craft a chandelier made of bones and candles if you wanted to. NPCs and other objects with physics will pass through the items just like in Morrowind The only way it can be interacted with again is by using LB or A (note that NPCs can still pick up items with Suspended Physics, just like you can, so items left unsecured outside still might be stolen by NPCs)

The only drawback is you could suspend the physics of an item in the middle of the room and have a floating sword in the middle of a room. However, to some that may be a good thing, maybe they want a magical floating Mortar and Pestle. And anyone who doesn't like that can either turn the physics for the item back on just not turn the physics off and leave it in the middle of the room (One of those player choice things like Fast Travel and 100% Chameleon. Don't like it? Don't do it.)

I don't see why then can't make these purchasable items like the "kits" or whatever they where called in OB. You know, the kitchen kit, the storage kit, etc... Make items that are either distinctive to a given house or generic that can be bought (and placed) in any house like the armor maniquin, or alchemy chest (for sorting potions/ingredients), smithing chest/cabinet (don't know how exactly smithing will work, but maybe have some smithing tools you can store/display if that fits your character), or how about taxidermy (have animal heads like in the tavern screenshot) to have your own freshly slain dragon head put up on your wall. Options and better controls for placing stuff in your house for display would be great. It was just too annoying to do in OB for me.
