Inventory management is horrible in Fallout 3 series

Post » Wed Jul 01, 2009 6:26 am

The inventory system of the Fallout 3 series has to be one of the worst I have ever seen. Everything just thrown together in a huge pile, and if you are a serious scavenger of everything, you spend more time looking at the inventory screens than playing the actual game.

Items with no or very little weight are especially annoying, since there is no way to specifically separate them from everything else. If it has no weight there is no point in removing it from the inventory, so this means I have some 20 magazine stat boosters, 20 some reloading/empty ammo parts, 20 some harvested foods, 20 some ammo types (normal mode), etc etc. I would like to see a way to just simply HIDE all items below 0.07 weight, so I don't have to deal with them.

Then there is the "Grab/Drop all" inventory function. ARGHH! If I use room containers to store stuff and I have more than five items to drop, I have to press the "Drop all" key. But if I am dropping other stuff one at a time, and accidentally tap "Drop/Add All" by accident, I instantly pick up EVERYTHING in the container! Ack....

So now either I re-drop some 300 items (and trying not to tap "Drop/Add All" again), or give up and reload the game from before entering the room, which is annoying if I just spent ten minutes sorting scavenged items into other containers in the room (food items, faction items, misc items, ammo/weapons, armor, stat boosters, known build/cook/invent items)...

For "Drop/Add All", if it means picking up more than one item type from a container, there should at least be a "Are you sure? (Y/N)" check.

Oh and for companions:
- You can't "Drop/Add All" from the companion inventory, like ED-E. No, for the entire inventory it is clickclickclickclickclickclickclick.. OW carpal tunnel setting in!
- You can't "Lock items" to the companion to prevent yourself from accidentally picking off stuff you WANT them to have, while removing all the scavenged stuff they are holding for you.

,

It's a fun game, but dealing with the inventory is insanely frustrating.

It is pretty clumsy, you'll just have to learn to live with it

Well, Bethesda uses a new engine for Skyrim and later for Fallout 4, so maybe they'll improve the UI too. Though i'm not holding my breath, to be honest.

I don't have much a problem with it. I pretty much have a very tidy inventory, but thats because I have a special way to handle things since the first playthrough of F:NV though.

the original Fallout games? that you could actually type in number amount to pick up/drop? along with the enter key, and a "all" button you could move inventory around pretty fast in the originals.

Fallout 3 series? WUT? You best hope you meant the Fallout 3 inventory system, not the "Fallout 3 series inventory system" because the original's inventory system was baller.

I hereby sentence you to play the first "Mass Effect". That'll make FO3's, and NV's, inventory management system look much better.

Only gripe I really had with New Vegas' system was quest items where not in their own little section like the key chain.

I assumed he meant Fallout 3 and New Vegas by "Fallout 3 series".

So true. Too much items in inventory, use ten minutes in turning items into omni-gel :swear: And the second one had the mining minigame. What did i ever do to BioWare?

Eh, I feel it could be better but I honestly dont think its as bad as its being made out to be. Sure alot of items are listed but after playing enough you can quickly scan through and find what you want to drop.

Only thing I would like to see changed for sure is the quest section. I think it should be divided up by faction so you dont have to click on each one to see which faction the quest is for. Sometimes I end up with like 7 factions open at a time and cant remember which one is for which group without reading into it.

None of them is perfect, but each of them offers more info and more items more clearly presented to the player. No need for extensive scrolling of a shopping list style screen with too few items visible at once.

Doesn't bother me too much, but I have caught myself organizing things for 15+ minutes. At high lvl it does get pretty ridiculous how much stuff you have to sort through. If you want to be a true nomad, sell it and don't look back. Crafting and collecting isn't crucial.

Thats what I do. If I find that I am carrying weapons I am not using I either pawn it off or go drop it off at my home and only carry what I need. I will carry atleast two forms of spare clothes with me at all times. One is a NCR uniform which will allow me free access to the monorail station to vegas for the first time. I also carry convential armor as a back up to my power armor. The rest that I carry is pretty bare, just the basic weapons I use, one .357 Magnum revolver and one 9 mil pistol. I also carry atleast one energy hand gun. I honestly dont see myself using rifles as much since I am using the .357 magnum with .38 special ammo, does pretty good at the typical unarmored enemy.

So I agree, it is smart to junk or sell the things you dont use in your inventory.

I'm sorry. I had to make a case and this time even the lowest of the low appeared helpful, so I used it to strenghten my point. Won't be happening again until next time. :P

I just wish there was a better way to organize stuff. Like I wish I could have all my magazines separate from my other aid items. I wish I could have reloading supplies not in misc, but in their own little category. Stuff like that.

Yes ! The STALKER series inventory !

Much more suited for realism fans (compared to fallout) but it was a good system with the weapon slots, armour slots, hot-key item slots and inventory grid. I just really like the visual method over the tedious FO lists :/

It's not the fallout 3 series, that makes no sence. It's the Fallout series starting with Fallout 1.

The inventory is horrible, luckily there are hotkeys and inventory sorter mods. But still the inventory is just a big list.
