Investigations

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:56 am

I am sorry if this has already been brought up, if not let's talk about this shall we?

I remember reading in the GI about the new radiant AI which is much improved from Oblivion given many examples. But I'm wondering if the AI would be smart enough to work together to figure something out.
For example, let's say you kill a famous or well-know person of the town, the guards would get together and investigate the murder by looking at the crime scene and talking to beggars since they are always around town and the friends and loved ones of the person who was murdered.
What do you think?

That would be insane. I don't think we're looking at that kind of advanced AI until several years into the future. On top of everything else, the ability to solve crimes in such a way? Nah.

That they would 'figure it out' by themselves is simply beyond us; technology won't allow for that kind of artificial intelligence.

However, something like that could be incorporated via another system that was discussed in another thread a while ago.
As I recall, it went something like this - if i citizen in a town is murdered, then an 'investigation' occurs where guards investigate the crime scene, the house of the victim and so on and so forth. Depending on certain variables (e.g. luck, fame/infamy, etc) there is a chance that you might be 'discovered (say, 70%?) and if you are, a bounty is put on your head and messengers are sent to other towns warning of your deeds (and you can stop said messengers, naturally ;) )

So yeah, such a system could be put in place but by the script/coding effects I mentioned, based on variables and rolling of the die.

it will be much better, it improve greatly from Oblivion to Fallout, but I think they went as far as they could go with that type, the game engine probably uses something new. As for the guard thing, I think it would be possible to do, but I don't see why they would do it.

I would like to know how they decided to scrap Oblivion's RAI.

I remember a promotional game video where todd shows it off but it was taken out for some reason.

I would like to know the details. Date of RAI annoncement/video and how far away they were developing Oblivion.

I mainly want to know if they'll live up to their promesis.

I like starting my sentences with I's and spacing.

It would be "AWESOME" but sorry...they just cant get that intelligent :(

*Edit*

What if you would do like you said "kill someone in the town" and someone saw you do it and you did not "get rid of him" so he tells the guard "the guard would just know after 2 days or something" and then after like 2 days posters would come up in the town with a picture of you "Drawn" and if you would wear different clothes and maybe different hair and "Beard" civilians and guard would not recognise you

It sort of worked in AC-games, though not detective work per se. But I guess it's possible to make them work together and share what they've seen, like footprints, blood stains and stuff.

that doesn't work in AC, they see a body and find you, they dont even question anyone else

and they do already conduct a little investigation, they go over to the body look at it a little and wonder who did it, but then they just go back to guarding

I hope the devs see this idea

Nope. Not gonna happen. It would be cool, but you're overestimating Radiant AI and current technology related to the Creation engine... by a LOT. If something like this WERE to exist, it would be heavily script-based, gimmicky, and barely functional. Guarantee you UESP.net would have a whole page of bugs to note with it, too.

Waaay too advanced for right now.

But at least make the guards less ninja - really? People know when you stab someone just becasue they say, "Guards, Guards!" even though NO GUARDS ARE IN THE AREA. Hm. I think not. That, at least, I think is possible. But maybe not.

you don't need a ps3 dev kit to know that the AI right now isn't capable of working things out.

Look at Milo, all that is probably Molyneux hype. You can technically say that that is the roof with the current technology.

in RDR those that witness your crime or see you after the act where you obviously screwed up can flee from you and report you to Law enforcement. :P

I think Radiant AI works like this:

You have one layer of commands: moving, attacking, talking, fleeing,...
You have second layer of schedules which is basically a list of commands that the NPC follows.
Then you have a third layer of conditions that determine which schedule the NPC has to follow.

Scripting some rudimentary deductive skills might not be that far fetched, but first they have to give every NPC a "memory", which logs where they last saw you and then write rather complex scripts.

This. Remember, we can't (at least not yet) program reasoning or randomized logic into computers AI. So it would be more of a statistical, they would randomly figure out its you. Even if you leave no evidence...

Okay, sorry guys. Maybe in The Elder Scrolls VI.
Btw, The Elder Scrolls series is usually ahead of their time in terms of AI and gameplay compared to every other RPG so I guess I just a little too ahead :P

Remember that "virus" in WoW?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupted_Blood_incident

Information, or more precisely, ideas can be seen as a virus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme), but that's beside the point. However you could utilize this as a game design. Meaning it'd be pretty cool if a guard had to be in the proximinity of another guard for his information to spread. As such he'd (or a civilian telling the guard first) have to see you commit the crime, then either try to stop you at once, or go for help / pass along his information. With guard patrols between cities your criminal status could reach all of Skyrim.

This wouldn't be too hard to implement I imagine as it's just a matter of the guard or a civilian having line of sight to your crime. Then place a check on this NPC that spread as he's in proximity with others. Of course you'd want to make it more pretty by adding more elaborate AI behaviour and interaction between the NPC's.
