Invisible Barriers or Entirely Sandbox?

Well to be honest It's pretty likely judging how big Skyrim is, how long it's taken to make and the size it'll take up on my computer it will hopefully have minimum invisible walls/barriers :banghead:

Yes there is. They were put there to help control the NPC AI among other reasons. The terrain is complex in some areas, and they needed to have a way to keep the NPCs behaving believably.

in Oblivion and Fallout 3 they were there to keep players from leaving the confines of the worldspace and glitching the game. the AI couldn't've surmounted most of those barriers anyway, since they can't jump or climb and the majority of those walls required creative jumping to reach in the first place.

in New Vegas they were there to keep players from straying off the railroaded path from point A to point B.

I tried to take a shortcut down into Red Rock Canyon, only to be met by an invisible wall at the bottom... I was literally 5 ft away from where I wanted to be :banghead:

No barriers.

It's all about Morrowind where you just feel like you can swim for eternity. SCROLLS OF ICARIAN FLIGHT!

Yeah! I loved making random islands on CS. I have to admit no barriers is pretty useful for modding :tops:

I think a cool way would be to haveall edges finish in unpassable cliffs or tall mountains, all roads leading out of skyrim should have border guards of that nationality shoot you if you get too close.

waters could be protected by sea monsters edit: or navy ships with archers, or hypothermia.

That makes more logical sense than invisible walls

In a province like Skyrim, bordering with mountains would be perfectly feasible, not to mention immersive. And border posts sounds cool. They could even have it so that they can be killed for loot, only to be replaced with infinitely respawning other guards....

I'd prefer not, just have them shout out a warning, skyrim is being kept out due to the internal disputes, and violation of the law (had to say it) will result in being shot at.

the guards themselves would have to be tough and have strong arrows that paralyse you, and after shot, you wake up farther away fromt he oupost, wounded. would be cool, but the invisible barrier is still simpler, and would still be a feature you'd see once then not try again.

I don't think there is a real good way to accomplish at the end of the map borders. Invisible walls "you cannot go this way, turn back.", endless oceans, giant mountains. etc. Any and all of it will pull you out of the game. But there isn't really anything you can do about it. The game world has to end sometime.

As to invisible barriers within the limits of the game map that drives me insane! Examples; DC Ruins in Fallout 3, and pretty much every mountain in New Vegas.

The thing I love about sandbox games are when I see a place within the game map I can say "I can go there." It gives you a sense of freedom and exploration.

Yeh that kinda bugged me about NV but its Obsidian... As much as I love the games they "make"(KOTOR2, NV, NWN2) Id rather they put up some invisible walls than trust them to do more bug testing. Im surprised EA hasnt bought them up by now and thrown them in their RPG tank with Bioware, lota potential but they need more direction.

Ive yet to notice invisible wall abuse in a Bethesda developed game though.

Heh. You can bet your behind that Obsidian is not for sale. They used to be Black Isle, and got bought up by Interplay, and shut down when Interplay hit economic trouble. I doubt Fergus Urquehart will risk that once again. In any case, they may have poor bug-testing, but they make amazing RPGs. So I do as I did with FO:NV: Wait a month or two before purchasing.

Anyway, there was as many obstacles that could not be passed in FO3, if not more. And I do agree they are annoying.

Well, try taking short cuts through the ruins in DC and you'll find them not-so-cunningly disguised as huge walls of junk :cryvaultboy:

I'd like it to be a single linear trip across Skyrim. As you progress with the predetermined sequence of quests you open up a new areas. Like a town and the dungeon beside it. Then after completing that quest you move on like some village and fort or two.

Like a single player action FPS only with RPG elements and melee weapons with magic instead of guns.

What I'd like to see is when you venture out of the Skyrim border a fog collects and then when you find your way through the fog, you appear in the same spot you left from, but with a few in game hours passed :P

New Vegas had more invisible walls than Fallout 3, on the world map at least. I hope Skyrim doesn't keep this up.

I just want invisible walls along the borders to be at least visible/indicated on the map, so my neighbors can still get a good nights sleep. Even if they fit perfectly with "natural barriers". For the internal invisible walls, just no, no, and no again. One of the most frustrating aspects on FONV by a long shot.

Actually they really only showed up in New Vegas, I never came across any (or at least any noticeable ones) in Fallout 3. And let me say, in New Vegas, they were [censored] annoying!!! I doubt and hope theyll be in skyrim due to the acrobatics skill, and man is that a good thing. Being forced into constant linear situations in a ES of FO game is just stupid

No, it doesn't. Morrowind generated new cells wherever the player traveled. There's no reason why the same couldn't done in Skyrim.

I detest Oblivion's immersion-destroying eternally spammed anti-RPG meta-game messages whenever the character walked into an invisible wall. Fortunately, one line edit in the Oblivion.ini fixes that fault.

I think Oblivion did a pretty decent job confining the invisible barriers to the borders of the map. I can't think of any other time where I confronted them. I would imagine Skyrim will be similar.

Not in the south, why did they not just extent the border down to the river south of Kvatch and made the bank on the other side un-climbable.

I guess the invisible borders downtown in Fallout 3 was so you should not get stuck in the rubble. If it had been an enemy on the other side you might not be able to fast travel out so you had to reload. But yes it was to much rubble in my opinion.
