Iron sights or not? VATS or real-time?

Post » Mon Sep 21, 2009 2:05 am

Curious to see what people play with and why.

Personally, I use true iron sights. I've shot firearms during my adolescence and still kind of do today. So I'm use to them, and I find them to be more immersing in games.

And I hardly use VATS only early in the game when I don't have good weapons or a lot of ammo/health items. I prefer real-time, VATS makes it a bit too easy sometimes. There's no better rush than a bunch of Cazadores or Nightstalkers rushing you with extreme veracity. Or a Deathclaw running full speed, spreading out it's arms as it prepares to strike. The Deathclaws are the biggest rush of them all :gun:

No vats, no iron sights. The former stops me completely, with not enough defense boost to justify it (not to mention I just don't like it), and iron sights were too much of a PITA to use effectively. Ended up shooting from the hip 80% of the time when I used iron sights.

Bullet Time (Project Nevada mod, consumes AP) and Iron sights. VATS when it absolutely must hit.

Iron sights are the kind of realism i appreciate.

No VATS for me, even though the ridiculous damage resistance is removed I think it's so annoying due to the long time it takes. (Very ironic considering I prefer TB gameplay.)

Iron sights are not all that well implemented but i use em'. VATS is ridiculous. I use it once each character to get the "Press v for VATS" notice to go away. It's cheating where I come from.

I avoid Ironsights (unless testing a mod), I don't consider them at all appropriate for an RPG ~grand for a shooter though. I use VATS quite a lot, though its painful to see their flawed implementation of Fallout's "Aimed shot" looked at as some sort of nod to the series' Turn Based mechanics ~its not.

While VATS is no longer god mode like in FO3 (good), its inherent problems (avoided by god mode) just make it not worthwhile (bad).

Iron sight are good addition which improves immersion and satisfy the little gun nut in me.

I never ever use vats... totally goes against the immersive-survival aspect I get playing this game. Quite challenging on a very hard hardcoe no HUD game.

Not just that but I find its not very fun... pause the game and gaurentee victory by getting headshots? not fun imo.

Yeah.. That's no fun :sadvaultboy:
They changed it from the originals unfortunately. In the 1st & 2nd games, VATS didn't exist, but you did have the option of spending time to carefully aim... This gave you your usual chance to hit the torso, or a reduced chance to hit the legs, arms, groin, head, and eyes respectively.

I use VATs for easier kills. I'm good at aiming in shooters, but it gets clumsy with Semi-autos and bolt-actions at close range. It's just NV and F3 too, because I'm a damn good shot in Rainbow Six: Vegas, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and even in Crap of Dookie. Aiming feels weird on the Xbox.

Limited VATS usage. Will use iron sights depending on the situation, such as sniping enemies from a long distance. IMO iron sights just isn't practical for close or mid range shooting, or against multiple enemies...unless sniping them from far away.

Not much VATS use, but there is some. Player View killcam is the thing to abuse in NV for easy fights.

Also, I couldn't even play the game without Iron Sights.

I plum forgot about the kill cam. I shut it off after the first few days of playing and never gave it another thought, it just got too annoying for me to continue using.

Same here, I'm generally a pretty damned good shot but on NV and FO3 I sometimes need to resort to VATS with pump/bolt action weapons up close. I don't know why but the aiming suddenly feels really jerky, like it's smooth then suddenly pulls hard...I'm used to MAG, KZ games, CoD, BFBC and yeah, no problems there with anything from single shot bolt actions to fully automatic weapons but I have real difficulty sometimes in the Fallout games with bolt actions up close.

I always use iron sights, really missed it when I went back to play FO3 for a while. I prefer not to use VATS, but will if I cannot hit (I'd prefer the bullet time as mentioned earlier as a mod, I've seen it used and it seems quite useful. I'd go for that)

Iron sights, yes. VATS, well... kind of. To my shame, I use VATS in a munchkin-y manner; essentially, if you locate an enemy in VATS, then immediately pull out and fire straight away in real-time, then you're all but guaranteed a hit no matter the distance. A shot that you have 10% chance of making in VATS will be 99% without using with this method. Honestly, try it. It makes sniping ruinously easy. Locate, snap out and fire instantaneously. You will almost never miss, no matter the VATS odds.

(This is mostly why VATS was borked in NV. They fixed the DR problem, but then ruined the accuracy. What's the point in having a 100 Guns skill if I can't headshot people from two hundred yards in balletic, stylish VATS mode, especially when I can accomplish the same feat in boring old real-time?)

I mainly like to use Iron Sights / Scopes. Just feels more natural to me.

I actually use VATS a bit more than I use Bullet Time, generally because Bullet Time is reserved for Melee rushes for me.

I just play Stalker. Stalker is unforgiving, built by Ruskis and Ukeranians to make you feel pitiful and inadequate. Sort of the opposite to the games you mentioned.

This is an easy game for me on hardcoe very hard, no VATS at all. The engine does svck for real FPS though and there are no really nice guns.

I just tackle and shotgun them before they have time to get up :hehe: Just like the Vanguard Charge ability in Mass Effect 2, damn fun, and damn stupid :P

The main thing I hate about VATs is how they marketed it like it's "sorta like turn-based" when it's obviously not.

I used to never use VATS in this game, but trying to hit the effing Ghost People with cumbersome thumbsticks is a pain in the ass!

And I can't seem to hit Gas Bombs no matter how many shots I take (Police Pistol)

Iron sights when its comes to enemies with guns, creatures at a long range, overall combat in NV, and for a precise stealth one shot, one kill. Hip-fire to keep my distance from a group of Deathclaws or enemies with a blunt weapons charging at me all at once. V.A.T.S. for certain melee and unarmed attacks (Fore!, Uppercut etc) I rather perform in combat in a rhythm, sometimes for a final blow to a enemy with a shotgun, grenades, and to spot invisible enemies (like Nightkins).
