Hi, just want to say I am a big fan of Bethesda and have faith that these issues will all be resolved in time. Although I am a little shaken by how buggy this game seems on release. Although, this seems to be the new normal for PC game releases, so whatever I guess.
Anyway, I've updated my graphics card, done the clean install of the drivers (I have a NVidia GeForce GTX 860M with 4GB of memory on it), turned off the Nvidia streaming service and have been able to get the game up and running consistently in borderless windowed mode. But the game crashes reliably, every time, on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. selection screen, specifically when I try to input my character name. The game will freeze for a second and then crash to desktop. I get a little popup from my taskbar that my display driver has crashed and recovered.
Now, I can play around in the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. screen all I want, allocate points, etc. but the game crashes every time I try to type anything into the name bar. I read something about Windows 8.1 (my operating system) having a utlitity that magnifies text size and that sometimes being a problem so that is turned off. But I still have the problem. I even thought briefly it might be an input issue (I read something about those) so I found an old xbox360 controller and plugged that in to see if I could bypass using my keyboard to type entirely, but I've been outflanked by myself because I realize the virtual keyboard that allows you to input text in console games is actually a part of the console's operating system, not contained in the game. So I still had to type, and of course it crashed.
I feel like the major barrier to this issue is whether it is the typing of the text that is the problem, or the rendering of text that is the problem. If it is the rendering of text I feel certain there is some windows default setting that is the culprit. If it is the typing of text that is the issue that sounds like it would be the game's fault. This is already too long, anyone have any ideas?
