My issue with the face sculptor.

Post » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:01 pm

First of all, I'm glad this option was added because my character's appearance is something that does matter to me. Before DG came to the PS3, I went as far as restarting a character because his chin length bothered me.

However, there's something about paying Galathil a visit that bugs me a bit.

Going through a surgery in order to look better isn't something a real warrior (as in my character's case) would do, or even care for.

It sounds like something a little embarrassing if you think from the roleplay perspective instead of just gameplay.

The artist cares not for the feelings of the subject, anymore than the knife spares the trembling clay. Now close that imperfectly rendered flap of loose skin on what we shall agree to call your 'face', and hold still.

Being based in the thieves guild, I always just took it as a way to start a new life with a new face. Maybe the old had too many debts, or too many bounties.

Not sure just changing the size of a chin comes under that, but some will go to extreme lengths to get a mate, maybe your warrior is after a girl who only goes for the handsome ones, or maybe he just wants to look a bit younger to have a better chance.

I pay the face sculptor 1,000 just to add a scar, chage hair and add or remove warpaint.

New start in life and not be recognised?

Remove any obvious family features due to being cast out/dishonoured by family/etc?

Facial change as a result of required surgery due to war wounds?

Or as above - to add some scars...

I do this too. I slip out of role play mode and pay to have the new scar, war paint, dirt, and or hair change done and then forget about it. I also like that the sculptor is out of the way so she's not like one of the regular vendors yelling every time you walk by. And you don't even need to start a particular quest line to use her services other than hear she exists.

My character loses his masculinity for a bit just to change his appearance.

Hey, could you paint my hair?

"Sure, a thousand Septims, please".

No wonder she's located in the Ragged Flagon. Damn thief.

I stay in roleplay mode when going to the face sculptor.
I pay her to add warpaint when I start the civil war.
I pay her for a scar after finishing the civil war.

I don't have this DLC. Do you have to belong to the thieves guild in order to use this face sculptor?

No, you just go into the Ragged Flagon. Whether you are a member or not she will insult your appearance no matter how you look and say that she can make you look "better." It then brings you to the face sliders screen from the beginning of the game.

I just wish the lighting was better. It's so bright on that screen it's easy to get skin tone wrong. Oh well.

I just find it weird that I need magic to cut my hair or to get scars.

I was really happy that they added the face sculptor. Derik would have been redone otherwise. And really it was only one flaw, Usually I change the lighting when in character creation, brighter to see then back to the lvl I play at to make sure the character isn't to pale or dark. With Derik I didn't change back, didn't check.... He looked like he had a perminent sunburn.

So he went down and changed his "skintone", also narrowed his jawline. With my Assassin turned vamp, I sent her down to have all the "face paint" removed.

They go to Riften inside their RP, but to the face sculptor out... I do this by interrupting their sleep. Rent the room, set for 3 hr's sleep, go down to face sculptor, go back to room and sleep til 6 or 7 am. To them it's an odd dream. Now if one of my guy's or gal's wants a tat that can be RP's.... but going to the sculptor to get a "battle scar"... IDK to me that is something outside of RP. But that's just me.

It's not embarrasing at all. Right now I'm turning myself crazy just by trying to choose which face mods to install...heck, I'm even having dilemmas with updating the lips textures :(

I don't really see the roleplaying issue because she's using magic to change your appearance.

For me, it's also just for war paint, scars, or haircuts. It's worth the thousand gold, though I ought to be able to at least change my own war paint for free, perhaps using this crazy thing called a mirror. Something for Bethesda to consider for the next installment...

I also find the lighting to be horrible. More than once I've had to reload and visit her again when my outcome wasn't what it appeared to be, due to the crappy lighting in the Flagon.
