Issues with Blender 2.49b

I've spent a few hours modeling a staff I look forward to finishing for Oblivion - I'm a new Blender user, and new to all of the modding processes.

But I've run into a production-killing problem, tonight. I was about half way through with my staff, I left for maybe half an hour to make a burger (it was awesome), and when I came back, I could only select the last shape I'd added, which was a cylinder. The rest of my staff is in black, and I can't select it with any way I know of. I've tried using select all/deselect all, and it still only selects that last shape. Even after deleting the cylinder, there's been no change. I am in Edit mode, and I've tried all forms of selection: vertex, edge, and face. Nothing will do.

I have found, however, that I'm able to use 'select all' in Object mode, but that's no help to me when I'm trying to delete an ugly bit of the staff.

(Note: Nothing was done to my computer while I was away from it)

Edit: I've also made sure to change in and out of wire frame, to try that. Nothing. Oh, and when I'm in vertex selection, there are no vertices to select on the staff. It's basically an empty shell of what I made.

...I.. Blender is so confusing. The problem seems to have gone. I changed to Object mode, I pushed A a few times, I box selected all over it, randomly, and then rotated it - Being annoyed and abusive toward my staff fixed it, I guess.
