issues with start up

Two things so far:
1) I can't seem to get the 1.5 update to work, I keep getting the error message "Missing or Invalid Registry/INI entry" and then "Old File does not exist" right after it.
2) When I go to file/data in the geck and try to open up the main data file I get this message "File FalloutNV.esm is a higher version than this EXE can load".

What an i doing wrong and how can i get this thing to work?

BTW I downloaded Fallout NV off of steam.

the up-patch does not work, at least for me.

If you download a NEW copy of the GECK from their site it is pre-patched to 1.5 and will work perfectly with FO:NV ESM files

The 1.5 patch is for FO3's GECK, not FNV's, and will pump out v0.94 plugins. FNV GECK is http://fallout.gamesas.com/eng/downloads/geck.html and will pump out v1.32 plugins which are what Fallout New Vegas wants. Although some v0.94 plugins might work with FNV, I'd be sure after getting the right editor to open/save anything FNVEdit shows as a v0.94 in the FNV GECK which will retrofit them to v1.32.

Maybe the FNV editor should be calles 'FECK', or something, then fewer would end up confused...?
