I've had this issue come up a few times now when modding Morrowind. I believe it may have something to do with IceBrady's Hurdy Robe Replacer, or Better Clothes but I'm not sure.

All the robes and clothing in my game look fine, however many common and rare robes (usually named ones) all display with very strange names such as "I D O" or "A G". Normal names simply will not appear.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? It's driving me crazy trying to figure out what's causing this.

It's very likely from IceBrady's Hurdy Robe Replacer, because there are some versions of that mod out there that have non-english text in it. The creators did not agree to this release!

You need to download that mod from http://canadianice.moddersrealm.com/RobeReplacer.html?action=downloads;sa=view;down=48 to ensure that you get the real version.
Yes, you need to register first, but it's free.

This also allows you to pick which robes you want to use, since you can mix & match them all.
